External Hard Drive for two computers?

I already have a desktop with a 160 GB drive partitioned into several drive labels that I want to be able to back up. I understand that an external hard drive is one of the easiest ways of doing this. I will also soon be aquiring a laptop with a 40 - 60 gb hard drive that I will also want to be backing up. Is it possible to back up two different systems on one external drive if it is large enough?

This is the first time I will be working with an external drive, so I am not very familiar yet with the techology. For those who are familiar is there anything in particular I should be looking at? Is there a large speed difference between USB 2.0 and firewire?

Thanks
