Newegg generic enclosures

I see in the forums and people ask for Oxford chipset. What is the difference between the Ali chipset and Oxford? I don't have a firewire port on my laptop so firewire is useless to me.

I just wanted to add a cdrw on my laptop and maybe and a dvdrw later. Can anybody explain.

thanks in advance

Marv...

the oxford chipset allows compatibility with firewire controllers and is very important.

however, for usb2, it doesnt matter. as long as the controller on the enclosure supports the capacity drive you want, it's fine. if you are going usb2, i recommend having windows xp, it's less of a pain. though any windows OS after win98se will do just fine. i have a 48x in an external enclosure for my laptop

Thanks for the heads up.

So oxford chipsets have Firewire port.

I know firewire port is faster but it's useless to me cause I don't have firewire ports at all.

not quite, it's more like if the enclosure isnt using the oxford chip, good lucking getting it to work. i use a pccard usb 2.0 controller with my laptop.

What do you mean? I won't be able to get it to work?

I have built in usb 2.0 on my laptop. If I use the Ali chipset Usb enclosure. It won't work?

I already have 48x burner. I'm using Winxp pro.

That's not true.... you can get a PC Card.

Why would I do this? I'm just trying to burn CD's. Why pay for something extra when I already have usb 2.0 built into my laptop?

I read a review where USB 2.0 with a 7200 rpm hard drive use up 30% of your CPU resources. Much more than your internal.

i have the combo firewire/usb2.0 one. it's the fourth one down the list on the newegg list you have there. it's awesome. a little big, but it seems like it's doing it's job. i've had some troubles with it. might just be my computer not liking a 180GB HD.

And the point is it doesn't have to be. You can still use Firewire w/ a PC card. So it isn't useless to you. I tried to make that clear... what do you mean WTF? It just costs about $20 for a card. If you aren't willing to pony up the $20 it takes to get one that's your business. I'm trying to let you know it's not useless just because you don't have a port, that's all.

Why would I want to waste money on a firewire pcmcia card? It would cost me extra $50+ to have firewire drive enclosure + PCMCIA firewire card. When I have a perfectly fine USB 2.0 support on my laptop. Does this make sense to you? You like blowing money for no reason? Heck if you do just buy me the firewire card so you can prove yourself right. If not stop wasting my time. Go somewhere else with your stupid unwanted comments.

rol calm down boys.

also, for the confusion thing, i answered his questions via PM.

oxford only makes sense with firewire. this compatibility mostly has to do with mac systems, or DV equipment. so, having a USB enclosure with the oxford chipset doesnt really mean much.

Wow.... I see flames. Sad thing is I was trying to help. I really appreciate the attitude though, it's nice to see. Very refreshing.

You weren't helping. Only thing you were trying to do it make me spend money for something I don't need.

BTW do you plan on responding to any of the three PM's I left you about leaving Heat for transaction that closed on the 15th? This thread seems to be the only way to get your attention. Thanks.

I knew it. Your just pissed cause I didn't leave you an heat evaluation. You kept bugging me for like 3 days for stupid heat. Maybe I didn't want to leave you an evalutation cause you were an uptight dude to start with.

That's such a nice thing to say to someone who bought something from you in the FS threads.

LMK if you want to trade back cause I think I gave you an heck of a deal. Samsung chips 512meg ddr sodimm for $55 shipped. There were many people who wanted the ram. If you didn't want it someone else would of taken it. Offers on the table.
