I want to get an external enclosure for things like a hard drive and a zip disk.

Do I want a 3 1/2" or 5 1/4 enclosure?

Just asking.

Thanks.

edit: oh, and a link to a good one at ChiefValue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply.

Both of those drives but just one at a time.

I prefer 5 1/4" enclosures that don't require AC adapters.
1. They can also accept 3 1/2" HDs
2. They can be plugged directly into wall outlets

Here's one :D

Thanks, Blain.

Fellas this is more like I need. I just wanted to test device without having to open the case. I also don't have spare cables in my computers.

If you just want to test IDE drives, there are just IDE to USB adapter cables without enclosure - much easier for testing. They come with a power supply. Newegg has the Bytecc one on sale frequently for about $22. +sh and geeks.com usually has one which is often included in its 'green light special' sales.

But if you want/need an enclosure, get a 5.25" external enclosure plus a mobile rack and an extra tray or two. Bytecc seems a very popular brand here and they are often on sale at the Egg.

Zepper, yes all I want to do is test the equipment. I ordered a IDE to USB adapter from ChiefValue and could not get it to install on any of my computers.

Got the old message "This device did not install properly, You may have problems using this device" so I was a little gun shy.

I'll take a look at the newegg product. Thanks.

Newegg and ChiefValue are basically the same company. Sounds like you need to get your OS set up with the latest USB drivers. If you have Win98SE, 2k, XP (anything earlier really doesn't support USB very well). Get all you updates and service packs from the M$ site and your USB2 driver from your mobo mfr's site and get them all installed. Make sure all your USB stuff is present and accounted for in Device Manager and with no trouble marks. For Zip drives and the like, you may need to install their specific USB drivers (and there may be other special things you need to do - see the FAQ and info pages on the Iomega, etc. web sites) usually BEFORE actually connecting the device to the USB port. For hard drives, no special driver should be required.
. But if testing is really your plan, something like This. It is also available in a 3.5" drive bay unit like this. I think http://www.jab-tech.com also carries these for price comparison purposes.

My problem could be the fact that none of my computers came with USB2 so I had to install USB cards (NEC chip) but all other USB2 devices work fine.

You've given me lots of stuff to ponder and I really appreciate it.
edit: using XP Home.

That stuff from Jab-tech and SVC looks very good.
