External drive seems to have LMA problem

I've got a 160 GB SATA running INSIDE a Shuttle SB61G2 with Windows XP (SP2) no problem.

I took a WD 250 GB, changed the jumper configuration to Master from Cable, put a in an extremepcgear ME-720 external case. When I hook it to a USB 2.0 port, it is only recognized as 128 GB when I try to partition.

Doesn't the support of the 160 SATA mean everything is OK inside the computer? I think the external has a Prolific chip set, could that be the problem?

I assume it the LBA 48bit limit. Some hard drive controllers and early versions of WindowsXP and Win2K have a 128Gb size limit.

Obviously your onboard controller subborts 48bit LBA but I guess your external USB enclosure doesn't.

Curiously, when I check the supplier, the page boldly says that it supports up to 400GB.

OK, got back in town, tried on another computer, no luck.

Opened the case, disassembled, inspected, and found bent pin on jumper array. Straightened the pin and, Viola!, 232 GB!
