External DC adapter for video card

I have an ATI video card (AGP x1650) in my Shuttle PC though the PSU can't provide enough juice to keep the system running. (It has a molex connector that plugs into it.) Can I take a DC adapter that's 12 volts and hack into the yellow and black wires on a separate molex connector to supply the additional current needed? If so, what kind of amperage would I need to make this work?

I don't see anything wrong in theory. However, I bet most people will recommend just getting a cheap power supply like the Antec Earthwatts 380W for $25 after rebate. But I still think you should try it because it's too intriguing. The other question is whether or not you can find a 12V AC adapter that will output enough amps. Most of the ones I see are for small electronics and don't output more than a couple of amps. But hey, maybe all you need is a couple more amps for the video card.

It's a Shuttle case, I hated to spend a lot of money on a more powerful PSU. Right now I have it working by having it plugged into an external case power supply (I didn't think about it until it there in my parts bin looking for an adapter!) Reinstalling Windows now, so I'll see how it goes.

Frankly I'm surprised the Shuttle powersupply cannot provide enough amps for your x1650. I ran an x1900gt for a while in a Shuttle just fine and those cards eat more juice than yours. What is the wattage rating for your PSU?
