external boot drive

i have a laptop and i wish to have a bootable external hard drive. Bootable as in everything runs off it as if it was the internal one. I would change the internal one but im afraid ill screw up the delicate componets. Any suggestions anyone? I have a usb and firewire port on the baby.
 
as Ionizer86 said .. check your BIOS and look for options that it can boot from. if it's not in the bios, then you're gonna have a very hard time to boot off an external hdd.
