External 500GB HD - $90

Assuming that someone considering this drive might like a testimonial from an Anand Tech member who owns one, I can recommend it. It showed up here about three weeks ago for the same sort of deal and I bought one. I already had a Super Link external USB drive which worked equally well but is garish with it's neon surround (all the way around the case). I have copied all of my archive of software to the Cavalry. The USB speed amy not be the same as an internal hard drive, but otherwise it behaves like any other drive in my system. I will buy another Cavalry just as soon as the e-SATA version comes in at a price competive with the USB version. By the way, for me at least the drive runs cool. I have seen complaints that it runs hot -- but that is not my experience.

So did you peek inside? What drive is in there?

There's also another way to lower this thing.

I bought this a few days ago using a 10% from buy.com floating around the net. I am not sure whether this discount is still working til now tho... so pls check it out first.

Yup. I helped about 5 people buy the 250 GB version of this drive while in Iraq. All seem to be happy with it -- especially the vanity light 😉

If this has a SATA drive inside I would be tempted. I have a eSATA enclosure right here ready for it.

I didn't open mine, but in the thread where I found it, several people did and all reported their's contained a Western Digital WD 5000AAKS 500 GB drive.

Mine arrived today.
I tracked it last night and it was listed as still in California.
I'm on the east coast.
Um, WOW!

I did use the 10% off deal Buy.com offered on the last day it was valid.

There's a sticker over one of the screws that voids the warranty if removed.
I haven't opened mine but endusers in other forums have reported that it's a WD 5000AAKS SATA2 500GB.
There are two other stickers on the top, if you mount it vertically.
I would think you wouldn't want any stickers where it'll get hot.

The base has nuts that "grab" onto a ridge on the bottom when mounted vertically that you tighten with a phillips head screw driver.

I believe this is made by the same company that makes CircuitCity's house brand, Nexxtech, enclosures.
I bought two Nexxtech enclosures this week.
Everything that is silver is identical between the Cavalry and the Nexxtech except the Cavalry has the ridge for the base to screw onto.
The Nexxtech base does not screw-on.
The rear fascia plate is identical on both products.
The power supplies are identical and have the same model number.
The units have the same notches to accept the snot drop "feet" they supply.

BTW, the Nexxtech is on sale for $10 AR this week; enclosure only sans HD.
Limit one per household.

In the last month I've purcased this Cavalry USB2.0, two Nexxtech USB2.0 and one Mad Dog USB2.0/Firewire and haven't noticed that any of them spin down to a stop.
