extending range on wireless cards

i was wondering, is it possible to put a larger antenna on a wusb11 linksys? i have a really big antenna in my attic, and hopefully would like to extend range using it. can you solder a coax cable to the wire leading to the current antenna on it, or is there something special you have to do? i have the v2.5 model.
