extending network, help with ideas

I'm trying to get Wifi where I just moved. The guy I'm renting from lives next door and I can use his wifi. The network will show up from time to time, but it won't connect in the room I'm trying. If I go outside and a few feet to towards the house I get enough signal to connect. The landlord is out of town for about a month so I trying to get wifi without having physical access to the router to be able to run cat5 or hook anything directly to it to get configured. I can't get in the room with the router, but I can get in the house to plug in an extender. Room with the router's in the middle of the house. Since I can almost get connected with the TV's probably crummy built in antennas. I'm thinking an extender at the closest point to my house would work. Either that or a router. I can get a connection in the living room with my iPad Air 2., but it's sort of spotty. If it matters, the router he has is the default charter one. Not sure off the top of my head the brand.

I'm looking at the TP-Link 1750, any reason to go with a router over this? I plan to get a D-Link ac3200 at some point in the future, but right now I'd just like to get internet access. I've set up routers as AP's, but never without using cat5 directly to a WAN port on the main router, so I don't even know if it's possible to get a router working in AP mode without hooking it directly to the one I don't have access to the room.

A extender/repeater should work fine.
About the only reason to go with a router is if you want more control.
