Extending 12V CPU power cable

Hi guys,

I have Antec 900 case Antec TruPower Quattro 850 PSU. For those who have seen Ninehundred you may know that the power supply is mounted at the bottom. Because of this the 12V CPU power cable is barely long enough to reach the connector (located at top-left corner of my mobo). As it is I run the cable through the little tight spot between PCI-E slot and the backplate of my case. This is somewhat tight so I'd like to extend the cable to keep it out of the way.

This is what its like now: Linky

This is what I would like to do: Linky

I intend to gut the current 8pin cable and use some of the other I have left over to extend it (the PSU is modular and I only use two other cables besides the stuff that is built in). Does anyone foresee any issues?

Also as I understand 8 pin 12V connectors are used by dual-CPU motherboards, however last two mobos I've had had the 8 pin connector instead of the 4 pin. Is there a reason for this?

No problem, just don't burn yourself with the soldering iron.

It is a problem inherent in cases with the PSU on the "wrong" side of the motherboard. They should have gone all the way and turned the mobo upside down as well (pseudo-BTX, IIRC some Silverstone cases did that).

Have you tried running the cable underneath the motherboard? Looks like it might be long enough. I've done that with several builds in Antec 900 cases.

I went to Memory Express (local computer hardware etc. outlet, something like Newegg in Canada except they only operate here in Alberta and in Winnipeg) to buy a new keyboard and they had that 8 pin extender Beanie linked so I used that instead rather then gut the cable. Works epic.
