Was just about the post a new thread and came across this one...

I have a 2005 Mazda3s, factory warranty is 4yr/50k

For $1300+tax i can bump that up to 5yr/100k bumper to bumper from the dealer.

Currently drive roughly 20-24k miles per year, so i will lose my factory warranty at the end of year 2....

Worth it?

I say no if you know anything about cars and/or have a good honest auto tech.

That is if you drive a American or Jap car. If it came from europe then yes it will probable be worth, esp. VW, audi, Mer.Benz, etc...

Yes or no? Why?

Yes IMO, but be sure it's w/ the manufacturer of your auto, not some 3rd party :)

Every one I have ever bought has paid for itself at least 2x.

Yes I have it... even if I don't use it, the peace of mind it provides is worth it

From my personal experience, I say yes. Here's why:

Had a 97 Tahoe 4D\4WD. When I bought it everyone said "Don't get the warranty! It's just throwing money away!!!" Had about 70K miles on it when one day the transmission just goes haywire. I can barely get it to the dealer to have them look at it. They diag it, and the tranny says failure. They open it up and find that it's wrecked on the inside, all due to water in the transmission. Now, I had ALL work (except oil changes) done at a dealer and I had the transmission serviced about 3 months before, so I asked WTF? Anyhow, the dealer quoted me about $5k to replace the transmission (only option) so I got on the horn with the warranty company and asked them to cover it (per the warranty). However, it took them a week to send a guy out to look at it and then another 3 days to decide if they would cover it. Thankfully they did and all I was out was the $25 deductible (and the time).

As for present day, I bought my Kia used and added the 10yr\100k warranty on it (since the original 10yr\100k warranty is only for the original buyer) so that I know I'm covered. I don't want any surprises.

Only if it is provided by the original manf.

I'd steer far and clear of independent 3rd party ones.

id got the ext warranty when I bought my truck. 6 months after owning it. The multifunction break light switch went bad. it kept my rear break light on all the time. also my 3rd rear door handle broke too. Dealer fix them both for $35.
