First, what Im running:

ATI 5770 vid card
Samsung 27" wide monitor on desktop
Vizio 55" LCD main TV
Yamaha HTR 6240 receiver

I replaced my previous DVI to HDMI to HDMI port on TV, and spdif fiber running from mobo to receiver, with a single HDMI directly into receiver from HDMI out on vid card.

I had my display properties previously set up to extend desktops, with my Samsung obviously as the master monitor. Now, with the single HDMI cable, when I shut off my receiver, my Samsung monitor switches to the extended monitor (so no taskbar, etc.) Now, looking at my properties, I have to switch to "Duplicate these displays" in order for my desktop with taskbar etc to show up on the Samsung 27" when the receiver is off. Also, looking at the properties, if I try to set "Extend these displays", the 55" Vizio defaults as the #1 display. Even though the Samsung is desigated the main display as seen below, as soon as my receiver is turned off, my Samsung desktop reverts to the extended display.

Any ideas?

edit: also, in the Catalyst Control Center, the Samsung is designated as the main display.

Well, I got an answer over at avsforums.

This is a known issue with Windows 7 and unfortunately, not whole lot to resolve it. It has to do with a new feature that Windows 7 came out with that lets you treat monitors as hot swappable. They have yet to allow a simple registry or setting so that you can disable it. One thing you can try is to disable the "ati hotkey poller" service to prevent auto detection. Another is to a search for DMMEnableDDCPolling in your registry and set the value to 0. There will be several instances of that in the registry.

Blech :(

I have a similar setup as yours, but with a Yamaha HTR-3063 connected to an optoma HD-20 projector. The problem is a little different in that switching off the projector causes my main monitor to shut off as well (it loses signal). Switching off the receiver has the same effect.

The problem only recently cropped up after I formatted and reinstalled the newest version of windows 7 (SP1).

That sucks :( Well, since my issue was Windows 7 related, I ended up going back to spdif/DVI-to-HDMI setup. I was just looking for ease of 1 cable instead of two. All is working fine as it was before now. I'll keep the 30" HDMI cable in case MS decides to fix the extended desktop issue though.
