ext4 file creation failed

Hello guys.. I am having a 500GB hardrive out of which 10 gb have been unpartioned ( basically to install Linux) . I was able to install Ubuntu in that 10gb perfectly , however i am not able to do it now.

Please have a look at the screenshots...



After allocating root and swap partition

I tried with other file systems as well...but in vain. Tried with both Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10

During the installation process., this is what it shows

What do you think might be the problem?

The first screenshot shows you having 4 primary partitions which is the limit of the standard PC partition table.

Are there any Windows/Linux software which could rectify partition table entry without causing loss of data?

Just boot from a gparted LiveCD, delete the swap partition, create an extended partition and recreate the swap partition in there. After that you can create as many partitions as you like in the extended partition.

Also, after you do that the name of the swap partition will change so you'll have to update /etc/fstab in your current Ubuntu installation.

One more thing i forgot to mention.

I am currenly on the Ubuntu live CD. I am not able to create even a single text file in the other partions.. have look at the screenshot

Also when i am on Windows , even though i freshly installed it ..all process seems daam slow, as if somebody stole my RAM. I keep getting " Windows -Delayed write fail " message as well.
Whats happenin?

PS: Cannot copy a file in the desktop to any other partition

What did it say under more details?

And delayed write failures can mean a dying disk, you might want to run manufacturer diags on that drive.

I found a workaround. After backing all the data , i thought why not change the sata ports and plug the hard drive to another port. It worked..My machine started normally as before. Earlier the process was daam slow..almost 6 -7 mins for the startup screen. No more delayed write error as well...!
