I have an external modem that can only connect at 1200 bps
(not a typo) if I hook it up to my laptop though
it configures it as a standard modem and it works beautifully.
I have uninstalled it a hundred times, and tried every driver i could think of but it still either doesn't connect or only connects at 1200bps.
my laptop lets me chose "standard modem" as a type of modem when I install it but my desktop doesn't
here are my specs:
laptop-Dell inspiron 5000e (sweet p3-750/20GB/128MB/15in LCD @ 1600x1200)

desktop
Asus p2b
celeron 300a (not OC'd -I know I know)
128mb crucial pc100
16mb blaster banshee
mx300
dlink 530tx+ NIC

also the modem works fine under linux
thanks

How do you have the serial port that you are connecting the modem to configured??? IT sounds like you don't have the serial port baud rate set high enough for the modem to connect at any thing above 1200. I thought that by default 9600 was the minimum but I could be wrong. Open Device Mangler and go to the properties of the COM port that you have the modem on and verify that the port settings are set to the 57600 setting and try it again.

I've checked the port settings, irq conflicts, and tried various com ports

also it's a smartlink 5634TS by the way.

both systems are win98 2nd edition but my dell detects it fine.
strange. perhaps the OEM version is different. I would consider reinstalling using the dell disk but of course it's that d*amn "recovery cd"

thank God I use Linux for most things, but I do need windows from time to time.

Have you checked out if you have the correct initialization string in advance modem setting on the laptop. In my case,I couldn't connect no higher than 48,000dps.Once I obtained the correct string, the connect serial port seed when up to 115,000dps.
Good luck.
