Is there any way under winXP to eport a list of folders in a directory. I just want a list of all the folders to email to someone instead of having to type it all out???

Open a command prompt, and do a

dir > output.txt

That will create a file called output.txt in that directory with the contents of the "dir" command.

its a shame that the windows GUI has totally made people forget about the CLI. Great example of y its worth the time to learn some basic CL commands.

But that is a very basic command... if you need the subfolders listed to, do a dir /s > filename

In the old dos days you could just type "tree" and get a nice ascii art layout of the folders on the drive... *sigh* i'm old...

Well you will have to excuse me for not being active during the days of comand prompt OS's. My DOS skills included using Fdisk, Formatting, calling directories, copying and executing run commands to get doom to run back in the day lol.

It's sad to see you're not very active in computers these days.

tree is still around on Linux and even has options for things like colored or HTML output.

FWIW, i wasn't making a personal 'attack' on you, just a generalized statement of some of the questions that have been popping up around here lately about things that could easily be done from the CL. 'Easily' being a relative term. If you've never had a exposure to using one, then obviously it wont be easy. IMHO, it would time well spent to learn some of the basics, because there are a lot of things that can't be done from the GUI.

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it. I have been immersed in freebsd from the command line, and neglected to learn these things. Like Bok, I learned only the netstats, nslookups, ipconfigs, things related to TCP/IP. Time to go back to school.............

Oh I didnt consider it an attack, sorry if I came across that way. That is why I ended it with a LOL. I am aware of my deficiencies in the knowledge of CL is all I really meant. I know you guys are trying to help, and I really appreciate the tips I get. This one in particuliar was very useful to me. Do you have any good links outlining the basic commands in CL? I would love to learn them. I am currently dual booting Mandrake 9.0 and I am trying to learn how Alt OS's work. I'll admit I have been very lethargic in my efforts lately, but do in time want to learn these things. Once again thanks for the responses and info. Meassage boards like this exhibit a wealth of information.

Why the need to excuse you? I didn't mean anything by it other than that file listing into a file is a basic command... not everyone uses that... i know a lot of people who would rather take a screencap of the tree in explorer...

As far as being active in computing, I am to a degree that involves my hobby of A/V editing. I have never had a strong need to learn the command lines for anything I do, therefore why push myself to learn them. I learn them here and there as the need presents itself. like in this case. As far as screencapping, funny you metnion it, because I thought about it, but this is a big tree and I would have to piece together a few caps lol. No harm taken by any of the posts.
