The Real Catacombs

There aren't a lot of rest stops so when this one presents itself we sit down. In the middle of the room there is a miniature stairway, a sculpture. Something to do with the 15 kinds of stone in this area. Well, maybe it's a bit scrambled in the translation. [ . . .]

We zig zag for a while then follow some ancient stone stairs down to another level. The real catacombs are not as neat as the tourist version. No artful crosses made from rows of skulls here. Bones are strewn about. Then Emmanuel shows me the side galleries. Bones piled three or four feet high - in tunnels that go... well, forever into darkness. There's a discarded pair of latex gloves at the entrance. Emmanuel is quiet. This is where the crazies come he tells me. I'm afraid to ask. Seems some types get off on throwing themselves onto the piles. Surfing the mosh pit of humanity. Now I really am glad I didn't ask.

Didn't they find a camcorder down there? I saw it in a documentary where some dude got lost, and only his camcorder was found. Footage shows him running around, and be more frantic at the end. No one knows what happened to him...

Ya, I saw that one too, apparently there's something down there cause it scared the hell out of him.

Sorry are we talking about Paris Hilton now?

i like really want to find those videos... there are many gruesome documentary videos that have been "found". I saw a couple. the sickest one was the one where these college students went to go document a race of cannibals. sex/gore/death you name it, real too not no hollywood special effects bs. i couldnt sleep for a week or two.

yeah, i think i heard it called "the blair witch" or something...

anyway, i've been down in the catacombs. creepy as sh*t - there's bones from over 5 million bodies down there. at the exit, people check your bags/coat/etc to make sure you didnt' steal any bones. took a few digital pics while down there, though that wasn't exactly allowed.

Catacombs are awesome, in the literal sense of the word. Visited in Nov 2003, and it was fascinating. The piles of bones in the ossuary are a little spooky.
