The problem started last night, and i thought i fixed it cause the computer was working ok until just now when it started again. I ran my anti virus, and adaware, spybot, and spy doctor, and spy sweeper, and still no luck. I googled the problem too and was able to find some stuff but none of it was the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way i am running windows XP

Doesn't sound too abnormal. I don't know how the shell is affected by outside influences, but explorer isn't exactly efficient...

but the whole computer runs slow, especially browsing the web and talking on AIM, there is lag when sending messages. That is definetly not normal.

What antivirus program (brand and version) are you using? Anything you can recall that might tie into this, a weird email or ???

You might try a free online antivirus scan at TrendMicro for a second opinion, if you suspect a virus infection.

sometimes that happens to me, I have no idea why. it will be SUPER slow, but once I kill explorer (and it sort of restarts) it goes back to normal. happens very rarely.

well i installed zone alarm, and like explorer.exe was constantly sending things out, the red bar was completly full. So something was fishy, i ran Hijack this and deleted some strange entries and viola! it was fixed, explorer back down to 16 megs of ram.

Good deal :) Does it stay gone after a reboot? You running really old-version antivirus perhaps? If you want to try something that's current, Kapersky gets very good remarks and they have 30-day trialware available.

well it keeps coming back after rebooting, i deleted the file in safe mode, but each time it makes a new dll with a random name. So i will try out that anti virus you recommended, thanks!

I've been getting this phenonemon recently too with upto 150MB used for Explorer...:Q

Coupled with 100% CPU useage it brings my A64 system to its knees...

I did change to NSW 2004 the other week and the reference to AV programs etc might suggest that this could be a cause.

It might be time to go back to using AVF Free Edition again.

that happens to me if i am browsing a folder with a suspect video file. explorer will just grind on it until i kill it. usually i cant delete the file normally either, i have to go thru cmd prompt.

yes i have both read about those same problems, and there is a fix for it, let me find it. But for some reason i dont think that is it, cause i keep getting a weird entry in the hijack this log

O21 - SSODL: ensbgng - {2E6A8B81-8E4C-4741-28BE-4AE0C5501E2F} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\rqcnk32.dll

but the name of the dll file changes everytime so i cant really google it.

edit: here is the fix for the avi file problem http://www.tweakxp.com/article139607.aspx
