I heard of a few alternatives to explorer. I'm just wondering if anyone has ever used one, and if they are better, or worse in terms of functionability, performance, etc. I was thinking it would be kind of neat to change the whole windows shell.

Floating thingies:
Geoshell: try it.
SharpE: try it.

Whatever you want, but bring your own text editor and free time:
Litestep: Omar 3.02 for OTS and OTS2 themes, if running XP, be sure to get the 0.24.7 binaries. LS offers the most versatility, by far, but is also very involved to do themes for. Using others' themes shouldn't be a problem (litestep.net, ls-universe.info, wiki.litestep.com, deviant art, ls-themes.org).

Blackbox: small, and awesome-looking. No way to properly emulate the look in LS, unfortunately.
BB4Win: nice.
xoblite: nice(r).
BBLean: smaller.
Bluebox: it exists...again.
