EXPLORER Error on Abit KT7A/1.2 Gig Athlon

I really need help on this one!!

I am running an Abit KT7A/1.2 Gig Athlon with 256 Mem machine I just put together. The HD is a 40 Gig Caviar with a Nvidia Riva TNT2 video card. I have yet to install the sound and modem. My problem is this:

After formating the HD and installing Win98 4.10.1998 (upgrade), usually the first boot and sparatically after that, I recieve this error at the start-up of windows which makes it impossible to shut down without reseting:

EXPLORER - An error has accurred in your program...CLOSE/IGNORE

Regardless of the button pushed (CLOSE/IGNORE), I get the next error box:

EXPLORER - This program has performed an illegal operation...DETAIL - Explorer executed an invalid instruction in module DIBENG.DLL at...

These errors just loop with eachother making it impossible to do any troubleshooting in windows. This will sometimes happen in SAFE MODE also.

I have tried installng the drivers that came with the mother board (AGP) for the KT133A chipset to no avail.

Could someone please help since this will be the system I will use to keep in touch with my daughters while stationed in Korea this next year!! Thank you.

Something has gone wrong in the win install there. I would advise wiping again and re-installing, this will save you any stress and hassle with trying to conme up with alternative solutions.

I installed 98 recently, and the recycle bin format was invalid!, wiped and re-installed from the same disk and it was fine...strange things can happen.

Thank you for your quick reponce. I have tried reformatting and loading Win98 at least 7 times, all with the same results. I have noticed that if I loaded Win98 with the 4x selected in BIOS for the AGP video card, I would get an error while installing 98. Something about not being able to copy Java files.
Thank you!!

I have tried Win98 upgrade and Win98 SE, both with the same results. Went ahead and used both Default Bios settings and Optimized settings with Win ME. Right after initaial boot up (following each new install) I would get:

Windows Registry Checker...Windows encountered an error accessing the registry. Windows will repair the regisrty for you & restart.

Windows ME seems to be hanging in there but every so often while accessing the control panel/system properties, that window hangs up...This tells me that there is still a problem but Win ME is handling it better (I think).

This has got me stumped!! Thanks you soooo much for all the help you have been providing...Any other suggestions?

Two things come immediately to mind: 1. Memory 2. Heat

If you have two DIMMs, try it with just one or get the memory checked. Maybe just try re-seating it.

What kind of HSF are you using? Do you have the proper thermal compound? Those TBirds run very hot and need ALOT of cooling.

I reseated my memory but had the same responce. I found some old Troubleshooter Diagnostic Software from Allmicro, inc in Florida. I ran some extensive memory tests but they all came back passed. When I ran the Motherboard tests, it failed on "System Timer Tests" and "CMOS RAM/Clock Tests". I have no idea what that means but I'm sure it is not good...

Also, the temp on my CPU was around 52 Deg C. Operating temp according to CPU is 90 C. I guess I'll be contacting BZBOYZ.com for another RMA number. The first mother board had a bad IDE2 port. When I sent it back they told me it was OK, but when I ran the replacement (this one) the IDE ports worked. Thank you again for all your assistance.
