Exploding Power Supply?

Whoa! My dad's PC was acting funny, not turning on, spontaneous reboots, etc.. Then it stopped turning on all together. He asked me to take a look, so I plugged it in and checked the PS on off switch in back, and pressed the power button on the PC. BANG! went a loud noise in the power supply and immediately a big puff of smoke came wafting out of the PS! I disconnected everything and took out the PS. I heard some rattling inside and shook out some bits of thin metal and what looks like the casing of a capacitor! WTF? This case / PS is only 4 years old. Has this ever happened to anyone?

Has never happened to me. but I have heard about something like this in my Electronics class. It is not uncommon for a capasitor (sp) to explode when it has to much energy gooding through it. Youre computer was probibly turned on during a Power surg. Plus there was probibly a short in it.

Electronic components occasionally fail. That doesn't mean there was a power surge or anything. You got 4 years work out of it and it was tired.

Let my guess the brand of the power supply.... Deer? I had the same thing happen to my girlfriends computer about a year. Good news it only blew out the motherboard and modem.

im looking for an exploding power supply as well. But one thats remotely activaed and can scorch a small room.

i need them for certain "removal" of people i dont like

I had it happen once. It was no big deal - didn't damange any components or anything. Shocking as hell, though, huh?

Had the same thing happen to me with a brand new antec true power 330 watt power supply. I feel I was lucky it didn't seem to damage any other componentsand they replaced the power supply no questions asked.

You should see some of the failures with large HV capicators (in multi-cell groups) in High Voltage Power Substations!
They occasionally fail, rupture and blow hot oil and porcelain all over the place.
You definately don't want to be in the vicinity of a cap-bank when that happens ...... !

The PS in my wifes computer did the same thing about six months ago. I think the case/PS was also about four years old. No the PS was not a Deer...LOL but im sure it was some generic PS since I bought the case/PS before I knew any better.
