BLACKSVILLE, W.Va. - Warning: smoking in the toilet can be dangerous. A portable toilet exploded Tuesday after a man who was inside it lit a cigarette.

Emergency workers said the man was not severely injured and drove himself to Clay-Battelle Community Health Center. He was later transferred to Ruby Memorial Hospital. His name and condition were not available Wednesday.

The explosion, which occurred in Blacksville, resulted from a buildup of methane gas inside the portable toilet. The methane did not "take too kindly" to the lit cigarette, said a spokeswoman for Monongalia Emergency Medical Services.

No kiddding. They went as far as filling a toilet bowl with hair spray and other flammable materials and even dropped matches in it before it went boom.

They said a cigarette didnt have enough fire to ignite any fumes.

The cig alone probably doesn't. But this guy lit the cig in the toilet, which means the lighter or matvh did him in. Plus it depends on how much oxygen is also present to aid the ignition.

Bingo. He was also in an enclosed porta potty. Not just on a toilet in a well ventilated room. Obviously the vents on the porta potty were blocked.

They did their mythbusters in an enclosed acrylic "stall" for lack of a better word and even dropped lit matches in the toilet. It only exploded when they poured gasoline or some other flammable liquid in the toilet. come to think of it, it may have been blackpowder they used since they couldnt get the liquids to ignite.

The only logical conclusion is that this guys ass let out something ferocious before he lit that cigarette.

I suspect on Myth Busters they were doing it with, umm, "fresh" fuel, am I right?

Poo decomposes, just like everything else organic. Methane gas is produced as a byproduct of this decomposition. If it's been there for a day, no problem. But if this was a port-a-potty that had been there for 2, maybe 3 weeks you could have plenty of things decomposing.
 
What's most flammable is the gas/methane in the air, not gas or hairspray in the "bowl". From what you guys described of the show, they didn't let anything sit around to build up a concentration in the air, which is what did this guy in.
 
For there to be as high of a concentration of gas it had to have smelled awful ripe in there. Far too ripe to want to spend any extra time smoking a cig.
