Explain to an idiot (i.e., me) what exactly is an automatic transmission with a manual shift mode...

It's an automatic transmission that lets you hit an "up" and "down" button to shift gears by yourself instead of having the transmission shift when it feels like.

A lot of these types of transmissions also include some software that denies the driver total control. For example, some do not allow downshifts into first gear unless the car is stopped, some will automatically downshift if the computer thinks the gear is too high, and some will upshift automatically if the engine hits redline.

On another note, good to see you posting again. :) Seems as though it's been a while.

Do you know what it's like in the 350Z?

i've never seen one that hasn't maintained full control and only followed your "suggestions" when it could.

It is pretty much the same in the Z except it does hold the gear till redline instead of upshifting for you. But there's still a torque convertor that saps power (not a big deal when you have 270lb/ft of torque on tap though).

However if I had a Z, it would have to be a 6-spd manual. Actually, any car would have to be a manual. Its just more fun! :)

Can't you put a car into 1st gear and then hit the gas and then thrust it into drive with an automatic? I used to do that with my sunbird LE (3.1 V6) I thought it was maiking a difference but I guess not.

Did it occur to some of you that there are people that live in cities or places with high traffic and dont feel like bothering with a manual in those conditions?

there are rare true manual transmissions with automatic controls:) they have clutches and i think they use hydrolics o rosmething to shift gears. so u get the best of both worlds, rather rare though.
