explain this?

new computer i built, bad dialup connection, never above 2.4. using a hardware PCI 56k modem. (have tried other modems, still the same)


Now, i live on a dead end road, all people out here get phone service via the same cable, so i tried my computer at a friends home near me, constant 4.6 connections every time!

phone line bad you say? well thast what i thought, BUT!!

I also have a old AMD 300 AT computer with a ISA 56 k hardware modem, it always connects at 4. and above. Im not going by numbers alone, web loading and downloading stinks on my newly built computer, and are fine on the SAME LINE with the old computer.But as i said, at another location, my new computer connection speed and downloads are fine.

SO whats going on? is there someway the old ISA modem cancels out line noise,etc giving a better connection? stumped here...
modems i have tried in mine are:

a new Sterling 56k pci soft modem V92
2 different Jaton USB modems
a new ESS 56k winmodem and a
generic older 56k hardware pci, which is the one that will give me 37.2 connection.

By the way, i always got, for 3 years now, 4.+ connection with this ISP. with any modem/any computer

Just install the new drivers.

Have you tried different phone jacks to connect to or different cords?

Have you tried the old computer on the exact same wire coming out of the wall that the new PC uses? The phone wire going to the new PC could be near a source of noise, or it could just be improper wire. I heard somewhere that the flat phone line can cause noise because the wires are right next to each other, and that this could cause noise over a distance; over what distance, I don't know.

It may have to do with the modem driver. I've had it happen a couple of times, that when windows would auto detect a modem, and have it seen as some generic modem, that the generic modem setting work better (hook up faster) than when I loaded the specific driver. It has something to do with the string of tones that the modem uses to negotiate the connection.

What modem standards your isp handles better than others may have something to do with it. Though most have support for the new standards, like v.90 and v.92, some still work better with k-flex and x2. What modem is detected in your old 300?

Answer to question one, i ran a dedicated line straight from outside phone company interface direct to computer, made no difference.
No.2 yes old computer connects fine on any jack, one straight from service to computer, no difference there either.
I also disconnected the whole house from service panel when i ran a line to computer, so the computer was the only thing in the circut.

ok now, let me back up a bit, i was using the same modem in my computer that is in my other old computer, a old ISA ATech 56k.
when this all started, so i assumed the modem was going south, and since i had a upgrade planned, and knew i wouldnt have any ISA slots, i went and bought a new 56k V92 PCI. It wouldnt connect well at all either. So i used my old computer for about a month while i upgraded (and got taken for 128.00 on Ebay as well!!) my computer. I put it all together, and to be sure, i ran a new wire from phone service to computer, still bad connection.
SO......... tried the different modems, the USB type, a diff. brand PCI and all still gave bad connections. And when i took it to friends homes, all connections were great.But the best i can get at home now is 37.2 after about 3 years of same ISP, same lines giving me 4. and up always. So again, has to be the phone lines right?

Ok a late day update, yesterday i emailed Verizon and told them i knew they dont care about my connection speed as long as my phone worked, but i detailed how long a time and what connections i always had all the time, i also added (tho not exactly true) that there were also clicks and noise in the line when using the phone, thought maybe that would help my case a bit. Well today they emailed me back and told me that i couldnt get help online (duh) i knew that, and would have to call their service number. i got that email this morning. Now i connect to come here and check my post and guess what? i connected at 45.2 ! i have only tried to connect 3 times thus far but the slowest was 42. something and highest 45.2
Now this speed hasnt been reached in a month or more... Sounds a bit fishy doesnt it?

I dont know about all situations, but i can confirm one thing about phone wire, at least for me, for the amost 3 years i had good connections, my line to computer consisted of 14 guage,clear coated speaker wire running around the outside of the house to my bedroom. Never one problem at all... However now i am using a heavy flat outside type phone wire a guy gave me, its new, and i have changed bedrooms, or rather computer location to be exact, now my line from computer to phone service is all of 12 feet long.
That speaker wire, bought on a spool at Walmart worked fine all that time i used it. In fact my cousin is still using speaker wire,has been for about a year from the service to his computer,and thats one of the homes i tested my new computer in and had good connections.
