I'm not sure about the performance delta, but I don't think recent 2D MLC is better than 3D TLC for endurance purposes given the much larger process that the latter uses.

I'm not personally a MLC snob (all my SSDs (9) use TLC besides one PNY drive), but there are several users on here who will only buy MLC drives. This way if one of them come in, they have their choice on what they trust.

It's better for performance. I ran into that scenario recently, when using a 3D TLC drive, the Adata SU800 Ultimate 128GB. I was copying ISOs from my NAS, and after around 55GB or so, my write speed to my Adata dropped from 113MB/sec, to 30-40MB/sec (fluctuating). My 3D TLC SSD's SLC cache had been filled up, and now it was writing to the 3D TLC portion of the drive directly, which is MUCH MUCH slower. MLC drives don't have that slowdown problem.

I'd say it's as likely to be the tiny drive size as anything.

I joked with Larry about the Adata drives, because they keep coming out with so many different new models (and pricing some of them as a premium drive). They name them with adjectives like 'premium, premier, XPG, ultimate, super-fantastic, and awesome-sauce', but regardless of size, they usually benchmark at the bottom.

On a budget SSD, the problems with the ADATA XPG SX950 would be mildly disappointing but reasonable. For light desktop use, the SX950's weaknesses wouldn't come into play. But given the premium pricing, the SX950's failings are unacceptable. ADATA can't beat Samsung's 850 PRO on price, let alone the Crucial BX300.

I guess that much is true, I admit. I don't think that they're the highest-performing drives around. I generally like their price/performance ratios, though, which is why I've been purchasing them, although I'm looking at the Crucial BX300 now for an option, I believe that's using 3D MLC Micron NAND.

The Crucial MX300 right now are the best priced. If I needed any good mainstream drives, I'd get some of those. From what I can tell, only Amazon seems to be carrying the BX300 drive right now, so I don't know if it's a supply issue, or they have an exclusive agreement or something.

That would be a Marvell controller actually though Crucial has likely put in some work into the firmware since Marvell controllers tend to need that.

Maybe, but from what we've seen like with 850 EVO, MX300 and WD Blue 3D consumer drives with 3D TLC NAND tend to be rated lower than ones with 2D MLC NAND.
850 EVO is rated at 2000 P/E cycles (or was several years ago with their 32-layer NAND), MX300 at 1500 and WD Blue 3D at 1000.
Drives with 2D MLC NAND tend to be rated at like 3000 P/E cycles as far as I know.

Not that I think it likely that most consumers would need to be concerned about 3D TLC NAND not having enough endurance for their needs.

Think that's due both to the NAND and the controller and probably also depends on how much they've worked on optimizing the drive.

And even if write speeds may still be higher drives using MLC NAND can also suffer from slowdowns after some writes.
