Expired Domains - Can't buy them?

I am trying to get a domain name that expired on 12/08/05, according to WHOIS.

When I try to buy the domain - it says it's taken - WTF?


Here's the expir data from the WHOIS
Record last updated on 12/8/2005.
Record expires on 12/8/2005.
Record Created on 12/8/2003.

What I'm wondering is why I can't simply buy it normally, as it has expired. I know I can contact the current domain, but why should I when the domain is expired?

Maybe it's being "parked" or held?
