Expert ninja vs. Expert samurai

Do ninjas even exist?

Anyways, you drop the two of them off at the opposite ends of an open field, on a dark night. The goal is obvious.

Who would win and why?

Obviously the ninja because he would hide in a tree and throw a knife in the samurai's neck.

Open field? That's stupid. That automatically puts the ninja in the samurai's battle ground. Now put it in an urban environment and the samurai wouldn't even get a swing in.

The ninja would easily win with the element of suprise.

However, it you pitted them against each other in pure physcial battle right next to each other, I think the samurai would win.

I dunno, what kinda samurai and ninja are we talking about? if it's Mitsurugi vs. Hayabusa, I go with Mits, because he's a badass. Not that Ryu isn't, but Mits has an awesome sword.

Samurai's are underrated. Ninjas are awesome, too, don't get me wrong.

Well, if you have any amount of cover, then the ninja will most likely not be seen. If you put them on a field, the samurai will overpower the ninja potentially. It's kinda impossible to put them in a fair circumstance, I just realized, so I apologize for the harshness of my previous statement.

Well, if you have any amount of cover, then the ninja will most likely not be seen. If you put them on a field, the samurai will overpower the ninja potentially. It's kinda impossible to put them in a fair circumstance, I just realized, so I apologize for the harshness of my previous statement.

The ninja would likely just outrun the samurai - if he's wearing any form of armor, he's going to be very slow, and odds are that a ninja (who wears tight-fitting clothing and carries only light gear) will be able to outrun a samurai (who either wears armor or much more foppish clothing, and carries much heavier gear.)

Then, he just finds the shortest road back to the samurai's home, waits until he's asleep, and drops an enormous rock on his head.

Hence, he would do exactly that (15th century Japanese armor, if worn, is VERY heavy, and even a katana can slow you down), and use cover to make sure that the samurai could not get him with a bow or spear.

That's actually almost correct. Ninjitsu/Ninjutsu started out in a very small village on a mountain for it's inhabitants to defend themselves from continual raiding. Dressed in dark clothing, they would patrol the woods around the village, using cover and stealth. It then became a style used for espionage and for assassins. Since then, ninjas have been cool.

thats not true cuz a Samurai's primary weapon is a bow and arrow, and that is much more accurate than a ninja star. It would be like plucking birds from a tree. The Ninja can shoot arrows too, but it would have one hand holding a tree branch.

Ninjas aren't required to live by the same obscure ridiculous code of honor that samurai are required to live by. The ninja will cheat and bring a bazooka to kill the samurai.

No, that's Ronin. Totally different.

Ronin were mercenaries, often ex-samurai who refused to commit seppuku, and not held in good regard.

Ninja were assasins. They were esepcially hated.

Shuriken are ineffective, and not really used outside of saturday morning cartoons. Although the daikyu (big-ass japanese bow) was deadly, it's remarkably hard to hit a moving target with one.

Ninja would often employ chisel-tipped knives, which would occasionally be thrown. Usually, however, they just stab people.

Of course, large rocks were a well-regarded and convenient alternative that any Ninja would freely employ as necessary.

Ancient Japanese bazookas were essentially cannons. (Yes, they had them.) They would usually be entrenched into the ground - hand-firing one was extremely dangerous.

Even though samurai armour was light by western late medieval standards and meant as protection more against slashing than stabbing, I am pretty sure thrown knives would be ineffectual against its laced plates. Once you get into the seventeenth century, well, the knives would just bounce off the solid body-piece meant to stop arquebus balls.
