Yes, at first. But nature has a way to cover everything, so it will cover the traps helping in hiding them

Is the marksman an expert in wilderness or is he just good at shooting? Can the marksman live off the land for few days or weeks? Does he build a big fire at night because he is cold?
We know for sure the trapper is an expert in wilderness. He can live off the land and pretty much disappear into the jungle if he wants to. By looking at the terrains, he can pretty much predict where you can or can't travel and laid his traps.
Depending on the terrains, a marksman without any wilderness skills pretty much falls pred to the trapper.

this is just silly, the marksman would win. When the marksman is trapped, and the trapper comes to pick up his prize, the marksman would just him in the face duh!

I don't know what kind of traps you were talking here. The kinds I am thinking will leave a few holes in your body after they triggers. :D

Warning, this will not be enjoyable to PETA folks.

It depends on the game and depends on the traps. Box traps are typically set underwater, at the exit of the game's den. When they swim in them, they get stuck and drown.

Another type of trap is the conibear trap. Here's a place selling them:

http://www.nwtrappers.com/catalog/traps/vt/vtc.asp

With those, you set them again at the entrance to a den and when the animal goes through them, it trips and crushes them.

The other main type of trap is a leg-hold trap. These are used for game like raccoons, fox, and other land-going animals. When they get caught in them, you either shoot them, or club them in the head with a stick.

I haven't run a trap line in a few years. I used to do it in high school with my Dad, but since I've moved away for college and grad school, it's not feasible, since I don't want to drive 2 hours a day to check my traps.

how do you figure?

He was a HIGHLY experienced marksman vs a somewhat experienced guy, who also knew a thing or two about traps. Plus, the marksman had been living on the island for how many years?

My example was "the guy on the island" = trapper and the "man from the ship" = marksman.

My bad,
I figured "the guy on the island" was the marksman, because he was trailing the prey with his gun, and the "man from the ship" was setting traps and waiting patiently.

Plus, in that story, "the guy from the island" caught up to "ship man" at least once, and let him go on purpose just to keep things interesting

Depends on the terrain. If it's suited for sniping, then the marksman. If it's got a lot of dense vegetation, then the trapper.
If acquiring food and water requires a lot of wandering through vegetation, then the trapper.
If the island provides a nice high point with a good view of most of the island, then the marksman.

So it's the usual answer: It depends.

you guys are all a bunch of newbs. if we are taking about raid dps 5/30/15 is best if you can leech tsa from another hunter, otherwise 5/31/14.

but regardless everyone knows a 21/30 survival build is generally superior to a 31/20 marksman build for pvp. yea, you miss out on ranged weapon spec and barrage, but just into range and give him some +20% raptor strike crits to the face with your 2h'er and its gg nub, ktxhbye no re.

I do see where you could have been mistaken with the character analogies.

To be fair, the "guy from the island" was just being an egotistical moron and got what he deserved in the end. He overplayed his hand.
