Is "trappersman" a real word? :p

Anyways, you drop the two of them off at the opposite ends of a tropical island with heavy vegetation uninhabitated by humans with their gear. The goal is obvious.

Who would win and why?

Marksman.

He can shoot the trappersman from a distance, trappersman must predict where marksman will go.

If the objective is to kill the other person, then the marksman will win. He could just sit at the end of 1 island and wait for the trappersman to come. If there were rules such as you had to move forward everyday or something else, then its up in the air...

You're trying to compare two completely different skill sets with different objectives. Marksmen shoot to kill, usually to eat. Trappers, on the other hand, trap to prevent damage to the pelts, or fur. Trappers use weapons pretty much for protection from unexpected meeting with animals...like bears, or to put down the trapped animal. Trappers don't go around trying to trap humans.....we are just too unpredictable in our patterns, usually. Trappers meet with success by laying traps in runs frequently used by animals....like going to or from water sources.

If they both have military equipment, on a small island as you say, then I'd lean towards the trapper. He'd be smart enough set up a trap (duh :p ) and stay hidden (as he'd be an expert in hiding things).

Trapper
Sets traps, digs hole and waits.

Marksman has to see his target.

i say the trapper because as others have said, all he has to do is set up one trap and wait. since hes so good at hiding traps he will also be good at hiding himself so he wont beable to be seen

The marksman has a sizeable advantage at the beginning.

The trapper will be moving to lay his traps. The marksman should be able to spot this movement.

As time goes by, the edge moves towards the trapper.

That about sums things up. If you had them on opposite sides of the island, said "on your mark, get set, go", the marksman can just sprint unhindered to at least the center of the island; most likely, much further. Given a 6 mile long island, the marksman can have the trapper in range before the trapper has set half a dozen traps.

Trapper. Notice the OP states that the island is heavily vegetated = poor visibility for the marksman = trapper FTW.

i agree
the marksman would have a great advantage in a light forest or brushland, but here, i gotta give it to the trapper

how do you figure?

He was a HIGHLY experienced marksman vs a somewhat experienced guy, who also knew a thing or two about traps. Plus, the marksman had been living on the island for how many years?

Obviously, they would just stay on their sides of the island waiting for the other person to come by. The marksman wouldn't come, cuz he'd be afraid of traps. The trapper wouldn't come, cuz he'd be afraid the marksman would be in a tree and would see him.

Now that I think about it, the trapper would probably figure out which tree the marksman was hiding in (eventually) and wait until night fall to sneak up to the marksman and shoot him down.

Unless of course the marksman has night vision goggles.

The trapper guy, hands down. Unless there's some kind of hill or overlook on this island, he'd never see the trapper. Actually, he probably still wouldn't because trappers work by out-sneaking the animals that survive by constantly sneaking around.

I wonder if the marksman would be able to see disturbances the trappers traps have made in the vegetation.
