I think Samsung pulled out of the DLP market at that point.

And as far as DLP goes, laser > LED ;)
That was my point. The market saw huge advancements in just a few years. We had LED RP sets 6 years ago. Then everybody pulled out and R&D dried up. It's 2013 and we still don't have a LED home theater projector for <$10k.

The new hotness is LED and laser hybrids, like the Casio that came out last year. Panasonic has a 1080p mid-end unit coming out early this year with LED red and blue diodes, and a green laser.

Speaking of lamps, has anyone ever replaced the fan in their DLP with something quieter? When I rebuilt my downstairs HTPC to be more gaming-capable, I stood by it and heard some fan noise that was a bit clunky. At first, I assumed it was my HTPC, which was surprising since I used some spare Scythe Kaze fans as they've always been very quiet. Later on, I realized that the annoying noise that I heard wasn't coming from my HTPC as it was actually coming from my Mitsubishi DLP.

I really am a bit too picky about fan noise. :|
