The Ornamentals who work in the Chinese restaurant where we eat are all pleasant, smiling people who treat us like we're someone special. Of course then don't know our names, nor us theirs, but "Oh, we no see you long time! How you been? Come sit down, we have SPECIALS tonight!"

I know that it's not a matter of those crafty inscrutable Chinese just being after my money...they REALLY like me...

I think you just made the OPs point. The Chinese resteraunt you're refering to relies on white customers. OP's talking about how they treat whity when they can rely on their own race for all their customers.

EDIT: Not saying I agree with OP. Genralisations are bad. Most of the time.

Time for new batteries in the sarcasm meter?

Seriously if you can't handle rude Chinese market owners then don't go into Chinese markets problem solved. I could explain the whole thing as there is more to it that that and you are correct to some degree but I'm not going to given how you worded your original post.

Well since you asked nicely. I'm 1/2 Chinese and look 100% Caucasian so I too get the cold shoulder in some situations like this. The OP is correct that there is a stereotype of the rude and or racist Chinese market clerks and or owners. Usually though this is the previous generation. I can't remember meeting many younger Chinese people who treat me this way. The older generation tend to be very guarded with foreigners, many have suffered a lot of racism during their time so there is good reason for them to not be very open. And many have simply not integrated into western society much. Another thing the OP is missing is the cultural differences between the way Asians and Caucasians do buisness when it comes to small business like markets and the like. The concept of the customer is always right and the owner having to treat the customer like some fragile flower that we have adopted over time in the west just doesn't ring true in China. If anything the playing field is tipped the other direction with the owner of many small establishments like markets and the like having an attitude of the merchant is always right. Again this is more with the old guard with Asian people and is disappearing quickly with the current generation. I've always though that if you take these rude gestures in your stride and actually open up to these people, show that not only are you not offended but understand it to be simply either part of a cultural difference or an older persons self defences mechanism when dealing with foreigners, that you generally find them to be very good people underneath. Of course everyone's different and there are lots of genuine Asian ass holes just like anywhere else. The OP seems to like to generalize and seemed like an ass so I didn't feel like posting this in response.

I'm a Chinese American working in China right now and I can say that yes, the average Chinese person here has no manners. Courtesy in terms of obeying lines (queues), personal space, not spitting on the ground in a restaurant 6 inches away from your feet, and other numerous examples is totally lost on the peeps here. If a person knows you they treat you well but if they don't, you are nothing...equal to a stray dog. I'm 100% Chinese but my mandarin has a Taiwanese accent and is lacking in the vocabulary department. The second I open my mouth, they know I'm a foreigner and start treating me like shit even though I look like on of them. What I've noticed of this is that more "lower-class" (uneducated people) are the most rude, while people who have gone to University seem to be inquisitive as to my origins, and elite rich folk resent me for being an American. But to the OP, yes, I've witnessed many other foreigners here getting treated more shittily by the local population, but that's mostly from uneducated shopkeepers, taxi drivers, and the like. I'm sure it's the same back in the states in an Asian grocery store.

I've always been treated like utter crap at chinese grocery stores, and I DO have extensive experience with asian (chinese/japanese/korean) culture.

In fact I think most chinese people would even agree that a white guy would get treated like crap there.

Just because white people have taken the high road and decided to hide their racist thoughts doesn't mean the rest of the world has returned the courtesy.

That said, I absolutely love Japanese culture and I've found their service to be excellent (when the staff is real Japanese people... and not Chinese speaking Cantonese in a "Japanese" establishment.)

treat them with respect and they'll treat you with respect.

unless you're Caucasian and you're going out with an Asian-American woman
whose father wants her to marry someone of the same ethnicity.

then you may be referred to as a "Bok Goy" (white devil).

Most Asians I've come across are quick to learn English and speak it even at a beginner's level far better than I speak Chinese. They are also exceedly polite and deferential in the business setting.. even to utter and total fools.

Never experienced that before and usually go to an Asian market every week or 2.

In the retail environment I do get kind of annoyed the way Indian families will let their male children run around like they own the place.

Also with the FOB's, usually Indians but occasionally Chinese, that try to argue down prices with floor associates, as if they can do anything at all about the prices

my white friends complain about how some chinese places have a different menu, one for those who read Chinese and one for those who don't. The items on it are never the same. The chinese one always has a lot more items that taste a lot better.

My friend took his white gf to one and ordered a drink she absolutely loved from the chinese menu right next to the counter. The next time she went by herself they told her they didn't have that item which confused her. When she took her bf again, they were able to order it. This time, she learned the name of it and where it was on the menu. The very next time she went, without her chinese bf, they told her again they didn't have that item. She was like what do you mean? its right there on the chinese menu and points and reads the words she memorized. They were shocked and gave it to her.

That's hilarious

The reason why they have those seperate menus is because western people would have no idea wtf many of those food items are. Chinese food is basically general gua's chicken, kung pao chicken, hot and sour soup, etc. etc. etc.

The fob ones are much more so with their almost complete lack of the ability to speak the English language. I always get the feeling when I'm shopping in a Chinese marketplace that far from being treated as a valued customer, I feel that I actually annoy them if I ask them questions seeking clarification about a product/price. Is it because they have such a huge customer base that they can afford to treat non-Chinese like this and still not suffer as a business?

lol, what makes you think they treat Chinese people any different? But I have to say Chinese people are probably, on average, more racist than anyone else. With the possible exception of the Japanese.

Yes, I am Chinese.

and most non-Chinese do not usually eat authentic Chinese fare. I'll eat almost any duck prepared dish and some fish ones, but that's just about as authentic as I will go.

No problem with any of the Chinese I have dealt with. Mostly in business so I don't know if that makes a difference.
