Expected temps for Core i7-870?

With a stock cooler and an ASUS P7P55D-E, I'm seeing load temps for both the system and cpu sensors as being approximately 70C. I realise that processors are designed to handle very high temps, but I was a bit surprised at the system temp getting that far up as well.

The computer hardly has any dust in, and has a chassis fan as well, and the case is quite roomy.

Intel tends to package coolers that are too small for their processors. On the low end they work fine but the higher end processors tend to suffer.

That seems normal for an i7-860 with the stock cooler.

Do you really mean A case fan? Like, just the one? Because taht will certainly attribute to those high temmps.

In all fairness, one 12CM fan and the fan on the PSU should really be able to dissipate most of the heat from a case.

I think we tend to go overboard in many cases (har har) with fan installations. How many fans do OEMs put into cases? I suspect that they are good ones to follow as they care about component failures when they ship millions of like configured PCs.

My 860 got similar temps.

Normal for a stock cooler. A good cooler will bring it sub 55c if not oced.

For a highly volted 870, I guess anything in 70s or even 80s is okay.

Yep, 12cm chassis fan (600rpm - 1500rpm IIRC) is what I go for when building every computer I've ever done. I haven't overclocked in years and typically my builds have just been '1 cpu, 1 gfx, 1 hd' etc. I've used the same case, fans and PSU in other setups and generally get lower temps with different boards/cpus.

I should also point out that I'm more concerned about the system sensor recording the same sort of temp as the cpu. Is this to be expected with that motherboard chipset? (P55 Express)

No overclocking is going on btw.

I also find that I have similar temperatures with my Intel® Core™ i7-860 with the stock HSF (heatsink/fan) but you can check to make sure that you have the HSF on good by checking all four of the twist clips by reaching in and pulling each of them straight up, if any of the clips are not seated right they should pull up.
