Expansion slot blowers......Do they work?

Hello. Does anyone here have an expansion slot blower (it's a horizontal fan that attachs inside your tower to one of the expansion slot; it sucks warm air out) or know if they work? It could save me some trouble in picking out a tower case; I found one I like a lot, but it only has one case fan and one rear fan, and I don't trust myself to cut a hole for another one. My choices right now are to either get a good heatsink and keep just the two fans or get a good heatsink keep the two fans and also add a blower; would this make much of a difference? The blower that I found is an Antec -- here are the specs:

Antec Cyclone Blower
80mm fan @ 3200 RPM
42 cfm
28 dB
voltage: 12vdc
Price: $15.00

Thanks in advance for any info,

Those slot blowers don't do much for you. You will be better off if you apply the money you were thinking of spending on a slot blower toward a better HSF. A lot of R&D goes into case design and cooling capabililities. Front and rear case fans plus a first-rate HSF will do an adequate job for most overclocking scenarios.

If I were you I'd start with that assumption. If it turns out later that you need even more cooling there are a lot of options that are more effective than a slot blower.

Dan, I Disagree. My Voodoo3 has overheating big time, I ripped the heatsink off (because It wouldn't fit otherwise) and stuck a slot blower beside it. Solved all the heat problems, the V3 hasn't had a heat related crash since.

Make sure you have good air intake, and have some blowing toward your PCI and you shouldn't have a problem. Expansion ones don't work all that great.

From my recent experience they work pretty well.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this product. Vantec has done a nice job in taking a simple idea and putting a nice twist to it. This is the most powerful slot cooler you can buy and the performance more than justifies the price.

PS i use the vantec, it is the only cooler I have used but it certainly keeps my PC a couple of degrees cooler and at NZ$25 it is pretty cheap if you have pci/isa slots to spare

FreeFrag I see your point but I think you'd have better results cooling your Voodoo3 by adding a fan to the heatsink on the card itself. Just my 2 cents worth.

I'm using one right now. It's my only exhaust fan besides my PSU fan.I put it under my V4 PCI.

Slot fans only work well as a local solution, not a system wide solution. In other words, when you direct it to one source, like FreeFrag's Voodoo, it will take care of the Vid Card. But don't expect it to do to much to the overall ambient temperature in the case, because those fans just aren't much.
