My work gym has a few basic machines and a set of dumbbells (no smith machine), but there is no squat rack or barbells of any kind. I generally do barbell squat to work on my posture and exercise the legs. What are some alternative exercises I can try to emulate the effect of a barbell squat?

You can use dumbells just the same as a barbell, and if anything it will help promote additional core stability and posture control without the bar connecting. Start light and focus on upright body position and staying tight through the entire range. Variations can be dumbells on shoulders, dumbells overhead, one arm dumbell, elevated squats (feet on two boxes, weight held between), goblet squats, etc etc.
