Not really my thing, but volunteered to do some hunting for my GF. Anyone have any experiences? She wants to strengthen her back/abs and the rest of the core muscles.
which is your favorite? flattered you would join just to post that :roll:Originally posted by: indoroids
there are plenty of that
DVD definitely preferable. I think we have a VCR somewhere in the house but id prefer not having to pull it out. I think she just feels flabby and weak. Not really about improving looks, just trying to BE active and feel stronger.Originally posted by: brikis98
Does it have to be a tape or dvd? Does she have access to a gym? Is she trying to strengthen her "core" for some particular activity or just trying to get nice abs?

Thank you for the site links, I will pass them on. I think the DVD appeal has to do with the visual instruction and as you mentioned, the motivation factor. Also trying to avoid gym membership or equipment. I think she understands to get crazy results she will need to put in crazy effort, but I don't think that is the goal. I think the idea is to go from no physical activity to just some basic simple things she can do regularly. She already has a great physique, and probably could not build any muscle without drastic dietary changes...Originally posted by: brikis98

First of all, to "be active and feel stronger" you need to... well, be active and do strength training
It's kind of obvious, but if you're asking for a routine focused on the "core", then you probably don't have the right idea. If you actually want to get in shape and feel healthy, you need to workout your whole body, and not just the "core" or some other buzz word you hear in the news.
Secondly, I realized my question wasn't very well written. I wasn't interested in what video format you wanted but rather if you needed a video at all as opposed to just following a routine as written in a book or a website? Virtually any video you find is going to be a commercial product, which means its content is automatically questionable. The diet/exercise industry is MASSIVE and there are MANY people out there trying to make a quick buck off of useless products. On the other hand, there are a number of credible books and online resources that are well researched, community supported and often free. For example, Crossfit, bodyweightculture.com and Stronglifts 5x5 are excellent choices that are used by many men AND women to get into fantastic shape. No cost, no gimmicks, just solid information and awesome results.
The only video program I've heard of that might have any credibility is P90X. I'm personally skeptical of it myself, but from what I've heard, it is at least based on a few reasonable principles - high intensity, varied full-body workouts, and making diet a mandatory component. If a video is what she needs to stay motivated, than it may be worth checking out. Otherwise, depending on what gym/equipment she has access to, point her at the sites above.

My wife used The Firm and really liked it. She and I both noticed improvements. Alas, she's pregnant and has stopped working out for the time being.:|
