BRASILIA, Brazil (CNN) -- A doctor excommunicated by the Catholic Church for performing an abortion on a 9-year-old rape victim received a standing ovation during a national convention on women's health, according to a local media report.

The response came during the opening ceremony of an event hosted by Brazilian Minister of Health Jose Gomes Temporao.

The newspaper O Povo reported that Temporao called on the audience to acknowledge the "brilliant" work done by a medical team in the abortion, performed in Brazil's northeastern city of Recife.

The girl was pregnant with twins after being raped, allegedly by her stepfather, police were quoted in media reports as saying. The abuse had gone on since the girl was 6, authorities said.

The abortion was performed March 4 during the fourth month of pregnancy, according to media reports

Archbishop Don Jose Cardoso Sobrinho of Recife excommunicated the doctor, the child's mother and the medical team involved in the procedure.

However, the stepfather was not excommunicated, with Sobrinho telling Globo TV that, "A graver act than (rape) is abortion, to eliminate an innocent life."

what a messed up story. i feel so sorry for the poor girl. she is raped from 6 to 9 until she gets knocked up (with twins) by her setpfather. thats just sick.

BUT here is where it gets really messed up. EVERYONE envolved with the abortion is excommunicated YET the stepfather who rapes the child for years is NOT? shouldnt putting t his poor kid through hell for years be enough to get it?

It's a bummer, isn't it?

That's horrible! It doesn't say anything about the girl - was she given a choice or lured with candy and cut?

i doubt she was. but hell who knows. but i doubt she had much of a choice in the abortion.

Somehow I don't think it's safe for a 9 year old to give birth to twins. I have a feeling the babies would have been pretty messed up too.

Why would you expect an organization that actively covers up child rapes by it's clergy to excommunicate a incestuous child rapist?

It's just like Islam, except instead of stoning rape victims to death, the church just excommunicates them.

How far we've come!

EDIT: Does the Catholic church automatically excommunicate any and all murderers? At least ones where the murderer killed an apparently innocent person? Or do they only excommunicate those who are involved with abortions?

Isn't Brazil an overly Catholic country? Wouldn't that mean the people applauding the doctor are mostly Catholics?

Well, there's a simple question to ask:

Who is responsible for raping the girl?

Very valid you point you make, and as you may have been able to tell my post was sarcastic.
So your conclusion is Catholics, as a whole, really aren't bad?

sarcasm aside...

Catholics are not bad. THE Church LEADERS on the other hand i wouldnt trust and do not feel they really want whats best for people.

i have no faith in the church at all. between them hideing child mollesters and makeing excuses to not pay teh kids who they mollested. hell they even went so far as to say the kids lied only to have them admit that yeah they were mollested.

This will quickly descend into an abortion debate, but the flipside of the situation is this--is it the unborn's fault they were a product of rape? I have personally met adults who were products of rape. I guess I should have told them they didn't really have a right to exist.

I read the original article and if it was true that the child would have died during childbirth and nobody here would have had a survival chance, then clearly they had no other choice. However, doctors have said those kinds of things before and it has worked out fine.

Edit: They should have excommunicated the rapist as well.

i know waggy, i agree with you. i just saw this as YACBT in the makings.

honestly though, while not an excuse to forget the past, i do think the Catholic Church has revamped and set up provisions to not let pervert priests get a free pass.

my only beef with the whole thing is that those priests aren't the only perverts in society, or in religious fields, but you'd think they are the majority. all of the sickos need to be outed and made to pay.

i see your point amddude, but does that mean that the mother should be forced to bear someone who will be a constant reminder of her rape? I say leave it up to the mother to decide if she wants the abortion or not
