Now as soon as the Millenium Jet is for sale on Amazon, we will truly have a hot deal!

Last November I went to a charity auction in Las Vegas headed by Andre' Agassiz. Kamen donated two Segways and the bidding was spirited. The final price was $50,000.00!!! Each!!! As a toy for the rich this will sell and sell well. Impressive technology. My mother lives in a retirement community where the main mode of transportation is golf carts within the complex. This will replace the carts as soon as the price drops a bit. When you're older and have a problem walking this Segway is a godsend. I will hope that the Segway will be available for a discounted price to any handicapped person. For those young people with alternate forms of transportation then this Segway seems limited. I bet everyone knows someone that this technology will benefit immensely.

Cough... so you bought that misinformation from big ag processor like ADM and Cargill.

I used to work for these people... let me tell you ethanol is a big scheme to transfer $ from taxpayer (yes, taxpayer) to the pocket of ag processors. It takes more gasoline (from Irag and Saudi Arabia) to produce the equivlant amount of ethalnol.

Science.. Learn it.

oh, about Seqway. Cool technology, stupid product. IMO.

There's a bad idea. Many who have problems walking due to aging, would also have problems standing. The segway will do nothing for them. I doubt that this thing will be replacing the golf carts. They'd have to keep a surgeon on staff for the hip replacements and another to reset the broke bones from them falling off.

Ethanol's not going to replace gas anytime soon IMO. The hydrogen fuel cell is being tried fairly successfully though. It won't catch on 'til they figure out how the gas companies are going to charge you for it though. The only downside-- Image the Pinto if it had been hydrogen powered...

2 Evolution doesn't work that way. If having a smaller body and bigger brain makes us reproduce more effectively than yes, otherwise no.

Evolution really doesn't come into play so much with humans any more. Think about this: On average, do you see smarter, more physically fit people having more or less kids than the dumber, lazier ones?

To the topic:

Neato invention, but not very practical for the largest part of the population. Perhaps it would be best for people who aren't able to walk very well?

I originally posted tongue-in-cheek, but since you seem to have a superior attitude about your knowledge, please answer these questions. ("Cough... so you bought that misinformation... "Science.. Learn it.")

How does it take gasoline to produce the equivalent amount of ethanol if you convert the engines to use ethanol? Yes there might be a transitional period when you have to produce the ethanol first (chicken or the egg) but once you have a supply, the engines or whatever machinery is used can be converted to ethanol.

And how does this "scheme" work if they start reaping all the profits that OPEC is getting?

Lastly, why make the Arabs rich when we can keep the money in this country? I mean we might not have had to go to war or even deal with the Middle East issues if it wasn't for our dependency on oil.

I feel that even if it costs us more (which I don't think it will) it would be worth it just to release the tight grasp that OPEC has on our gonads.

Well if a "Fitness Hitler" ever comes into world power, that could alter the future gene pool. Course maybe "Fat Hitler" could come to power. I think human evolution will be shaped by smarter people. Smart people are less likely to do something stupid and get hurt or killed, they also are more attractive to other smart people leading hopefully to smart kids who have all the oppurtunuties in life. There arent alot of really rich dumb people in the world, and we can all agree that money greatly impacts your quality of life.

Of course maybe idiots plan to outbreed smarties...hmmmn

They don't need to plan...it just happens.

Having money or good looks or being smart does not necessarily equate to having more reproductive success (more kids) in today's society. In fact, it seems to me that the opposite is true.

<ON TOPIC>
Where do you park a Segway? Do you bring it inside with you? Do you chain to to a bike rack? park it in the parking lot?

Also, I think it would be tough to negotiate a lot of commutes, because it's too slow to be on the road, but the sidewalks (at least around here) are not always conducive to rolling devices.

How long before someone fits one of these things with groud effect lights, Cragar mags, and NOS? Now THAT would be cool.

It's a neat vechile, but in ints current incarnation it's too limited to be practical on a large scope. That said, my hat's off to Kamen, I sure as hell couldn't have built that thing.

In what way is a Segway 12.5 mph faster then a bike? Oh, you probably mean that it is faster standing still on a Segway then it is standing still on top of a bike?
Actually I already own a miracle personal transportation device that blows away the Segway. It's range is 200miles (segway is 10), it is rated for more than 250 pounds (Segway max is 250, I'm 255), it will go across even more types of terrain than the Segway, and it's top speed is over 100MPH (instead of 12.5MPH for the Segway. All that and it cost just about the same.
My miracle transportation device? Say it with me: m-o-t-o-r-c-y-c-l-e! :)
My friends who are doctors tell me that they have a special name for motorcycle riders. They call them "Organ Donors." :)

Not to insult you, but motorcycles are not for everyone. I saw Russell Crowe learn how to ride one on the "Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in 1 minute. I think it'd a lot longer to learn how to ride a motorcycle.

Improvement on walking? This is a goofy looking device to me, who in the right mind would go down the street on one of these. They dont show anyone using it in the rain or snow, so its only useful when its nice outside.

At $5000, your better off with a car which can not only transport you but others as well and have room to spare.

This thing looks like something from a Woody Allen movie where a cop would pull you over riding these geek-mobiles.

I be surprised if amazon sells any of these, its a rich boy toy, has no practical use in everyday life.

btw-- if you ride this down the streets of nyc, your a nice moving target :)

In your post, if you substitute "horse and buggy" for "car," and ignore the Woody Allen comment, you get the same kind of comments people used to say about the "bicycle." People have been belittling the new gadget in town since the invention of the wheel.

BTW, for those who think they'd buy another car before even considering the Segway: Don't you dare complain when gas hits $2.00/gallon this summer. The Segway costs pennies per day to operate.

Must I assume you don't drive a car or ride a bicycle, and that you squeeze most of your food out of an easy-opening plastic bag? Those can-openers can be a bear to learn how to work, let alone learning how to cook. Did you decide to stop after learning how to say "super size that, please"?

Most of the motorcycle organ donors come from cars running over them. I am sure that Segways are immune to cars, right?

Hey, that's weird. I was there too. I was sitting at Dean Kame's, actually. I kept peppering him with questions (I was probably bugging the hell out of him). I think that contraption is awesome. I'm sure the technology itself will have other applications, as well.

I think the Seqway will be made obsolete by the new mini electric scooters that are becoming more popular (see ebay). They weigh less (47-60 lbs vs 83) so they can be moved to a secure location more easily. You can go further on a charge while sitting down. They only cost $300 shipped at the most.

According to the adverts, 2.5 hrs battery life.

Tested speed by one seller;

225lb Rider can expect to go about 15-17mph
160lb Rider can Expect to go about 17-18mph
100lb Rider can expect to go about 18-19mph
85lb Rider can expect to go about 19-20MPH

Segway only goes 12.5 mph, and 15 miles max.

Search for "(boreem ,dolphin) electric scooter" on ebay.

Umm.. that's because your can only go about 30 miles in a day on a Segway. If I only drove 30 miles in a day in my car it would only cost pennies a day too. Of course my commute to work would then take 5 hours a day round trip instead of 30 mins. Therefore limiting my time with my family to nothing everyday, but hey! anything to save the environment!! Instead of dumping $5k into a device to save me on gas, I'll will instead buy 2,500 gallons of gas at $2 a gallon. At 30mpg that will get me 75,000 mile (roughly 6-7 years of driving for me).

The boss here at work bought one....had a chance to ride it. Pretty damn nifty! I wouldn't buy one, but then again I don't have $5000 :D

Going 30 miles will cost you $2.

From the seqway page on amazon;

10 miles in good conditions on a single charge, 15 miles under optimal test conditions

You guys are fantasizing about 30 miles.

I'm not worried - here in SF - the primo stuff is already up to as high as $2.50/gal ! But I'd still say that my brother's go-ped that can go up to ~25mph w/ minimal gas consumption (costs ~$.75 to fill up that 1.5L tank) is much more efficient.
