I'll be cold and deal hopefully before I end up on one of these contraptions--at least the $5000 pricetag is keeping me away.

Hasn't this been on their website for like 6 months now?

Anyway, here's the bumper sticker seen on most of these:

"I'm cold, I'm wet, and I'm late."

This is awsome. Now that I can avoid that long walk from the parking lot to the gym, maybe I will work out more!

Yeah, they've been pre-selling these for months now. I think they started shipping in March...so most ppl who ordered one got them by the end of this month.

There's a video on Amazon's site which shows people using the Segway.

In what way is a Segway 12.5 mph faster then a bike? Oh, you probably mean that it is faster standing still on a Segway then it is standing still on top of a bike?
Actually I already own a miracle personal transportation device that blows away the Segway. It's range is 200miles (segway is 10), it is rated for more than 250 pounds (Segway max is 250, I'm 255), it will go across even more types of terrain than the Segway, and it's top speed is over 100MPH (instead of 12.5MPH for the Segway. All that and it cost just about the same.
My miracle transportation device? Say it with me: m-o-t-o-r-c-y-c-l-e! :)

Man, did you see that video? Those guys were riding it like a stiffie!!! I'm sure it would be fun to ride around for an hour or so, but not all the time. Definitely wouldnt buy that even if it was $500.

You know, this is why I think people aren't worth saving. Honestly.

Does anybody actually making these posts have a clue who Dean Kamen is? Or how he's made this a better world for tons of people?

Segway wasn't meant as a replacement for WALKING (only thick skulls or the infinitely unimaginative see that), but for short trips that people are ALREADY using a car for (lots of exercise there, too). Non-polluting, cheap, and ideal for those short trips everyone makes that they don't walk (when's the last time one of you wise guys said "I'm going to jog down to the store 5 miles away and back.") No, you hop in your CAR and go.

I've read a web log from a guy who purchased one in Seattle (I know, rain...beats me) and uses it as a car replacement. He and his wife save HUNDREDS every month because of that one less car payment (they still have another....don't be stupid), gas, insurance, and parking. They're donating the money they've saved (enough to pay for the Segway within a matter of months) to different charities they are interested in supporting...every month.

Maybe my little flame here is unwarranted, but knowing as much as I do about Dean Kamen and why he does what he does, it just makes me ill. I honestly get to the point where I think people really aren't worth helping or saving.

Do me a favor....start here to learn about what led to the development of Segway.

Click the video link on the page

Then go read the Time article on him, or any of the others. Dean invented the portable dialisis machine that freed individuals from a life at the hospital, stints that are now common use in heart surgeries saving countless lives, a wheelchair that gives people back their full mobility and useful reach, the Segway to counter pollution at a small cost for those always small trips people constantly take, and his new project.....a small sterling engine capable of powering a device from any burnable source of material that creates clean water, perfect for solving one of the biggest problems in this century in 3rd world countries.

Dean has done nothing but make meaningful contributions to this world, dramatically impacted peoples lives for the better, and leads a foundation paid out of his own money to encourage children to take an interest in science an technology.

This may be out of place here, and I apologize to the mods, but making fun of his work without seeing the potential infuriates me. It's just lucky that he, and people like him, aren't disuaded as easily.:disgust:

Uhhh, I haven't read anybody bashing Kamen or questioning his motives for his cool little toy that answers a qustion that nobody asked.

It is a cool little piece of technology. Your guy in Seattle could have saved another $3500 by buying a commuter bike and riding to work. I can tell that would be a viable solution, since the bike is faster, can cover the same ground as the Segway (more, actually), is no worse in the rain then the Segway and isn't limited to 10 miles between charges, and also doesn't pollute. This guy in Seattle made up am excuse to get a toy. It wasn't the most practical solution by a long shot.

You say it isn't a replacement for walking? In the Salon article they said "Kamen positively gushes at the idea of rendering walking obsolete. "

The idea of replacing the car for a trip to the store also is faulty, unless what you buy will fit in your backpack or some sort of basket you attach to the thing, in which case you could have just rode your inexpensive bicycle.

If you don't want to ride a bicycle, the only alternative is not the Segway. My parents happen to like driving their SUV, which I think is way more practical for their needs then is a Seway, seeing as the nearest store is 5 miles away wo they would have to recharge while they were there! They are also able to bring things home from the store and go to the store in the rain. When they want to walk (which is everyday), they walk. When they have an errand to do, they take the SUV. The ELECTRIC SUV (Toyota RAV4). Makes more sense to me, so toss me, my hiking boots, my bicycle and my electric SUV up onto the dung heap of humanity.

Rant countered!

Silly me- I don't want to walk, I take the bus.

Kamen would have had better spent his time developing alternative fuel sources for current modes of transportation than inventing totally new ones.

Although Sumrtym and Aiyana have opposing viewpoints they're both wrong...but I just like to argue.

Please tell me more, Aiyana. I really respect anyone that has their mind shaped by "Salon" articles, especially when it comes to science and technology.
