I was a big fan of Excitetruck. I know a lot of people weren't, it was pretty shallow on content, control, and a lot of things that racing games should have. But I liked it anyway, and played the hell out of that game.
So I was pretty excited about Excitebots, and even more excited when I found out it would have online multiplayer, something that was sorely missing from Trucks.
Picked it up, played for about 2 hours last night. If you hated Excite Truck, I don't know that Bots is going to bring enough new to the table to turn you around. It still doesn't have enough tracks, and while they've added some changes in the vehicles as far as speed and handling, it's not going to compete with a game like Motorstorm in that respect.
Having said that, I don't think it's meant to, it's meant to be an over the top, fast experience you can enjoy by yourself or with friends. It's like the Peggle of racing games, you have different robots modeled after several insect/animals, you can choose different colors for them, and the more starts you get, the more bots and colors you can choose from.
There are some cool dynamics to the game, such as horizontal bars are places in the game that your bot grabs onto and you spin him as quickly as you can in a given amount of time before he flies ahead on the track. Spin really fast, and you can shoot ahead of all the other bots, do a poor job, and you fall further behind.
There are also the pickups from previous games that give you speed and change the layout of the track, raising and lowering hills, things like that, which adds a lot to the variation of the admittedly limited number of available tracks in the game.
Overall, if you own a Wii and you're looking for a good racing game, you could do a lot worse than Excitebots. For myself, I give it 4/5. It could use more tracks, and they could have thrown in some more customization on the bots, but for the platform it's on, and given that they've introduced online multi into the series, I'll cut them some slack. It's a blast to play, hasn't gotten overly frustrating to me (yet), and using the old addendum, it looks pretty good for a Wii game.
