Exchange Server question

If I setup exchange server on my internal network, say Hey.com, can anybody external to the my network email to members under Hey.com, or does that Hey.com have to be a registered domain first? I'm assuming so?...

Another exchange newbie asking dumb questions, sowee! 😛

It has to be a registered domain with valid MX records that point to your Exchange server at your IP address of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. You don't necessarily have to host the actual domain of www.xxx.com, but if you don't your hosting service should be able to point your MX mail records towards your mail server.
