I have a question for you Exchange gurus or admins. Currently at my work we connect through a workgroup. However, we do connect to an Exchange that is off site. Are there certain settings like MAC address etc that have to go into Exchange prior to letting me connect and download data? I brought my home PC to work and I plan on using it here. I tried to set up Exchange and it says it can?t find the server. I changed my computer name to the same name as the old computer I was using. Any ideas?

I have no clue what the address is lol. Where can I find it?

I just go to e-mail accounts, then add an Exchange Account and then type in the server name and my user name/mailbox name.

Ok n0c, I found the IP and no, I'm unable to ping the Exchange server IP.

I take that back, I am able to ping the Exchange server.

Sounds like a network problem, get the network administrator to help you troubleshoot the issue. :p

EDIT: Oh, you changed your answer. :p Put the ip in instead of the servername and try again.

ping the server name

you might not have the dns record

so, ping the server on your main computer, try pinging the ip you get from that query from your laptop

but seriosly, talk to your network admins before that, they will either help you or tell you not to according to corporate policy, and dont piss of us network admins :p

Well the company is like 10 people large and they're really busy. We don't have one specific network admin.

Ok so I get prompted for a l/p when I try the IP address. Prior to this on my other computer I would not get prompted for a password. Does it sound like I just don't have the DNS entry? I would have to contact my admin then huh?

yeah sounds about right
check out the dns server your work computer, set that one on the laptop

or you could check the host file on your laptop, edit it to include your exchange server

actually one thing you might be overlooking is your connection at work. when you say that the server is offsite, is it part of the company at a remote site or is it being run by a third party? If it is the first , then you may need to have VPN access into your work network in order to use the ip settings that you want. If it is the second then you need to find out whether your exchange server account is set up via exchange or via pop service. since you say you can ping the address from home I dont think it's a DNS issue as the exchange server's IP is open to the world (it could be open to allow for web or OWA access), it sounds as if you may need to use a VPN connection into the network to pick up the proper network and authentication settings for your home machine.

Hope that helps
