Exchange 2000 w/o active directory? Alternatives to Exchange 2K?

Is there anyway to setup Exchange 2000 server without implementing Active Directory on Windows 2000 Server?

If not, what are other cheap alternatives to Exchange 2000 server?

thx!

I think you can use oracle for mail backend and outlook front end..

but I think you'll lose the ability of using customize apps in the server. ie custom forms.

mixed mode and native mode have only to do with AD domain controllers being able to communicate with pre-Windows 2000 domain controllers (i.e. nt 4 ). you can have exchange 2000 in an active directory domain running in mixed mode.

alternatives to exchange-

openmail from hp
groupwise from netware
imail from ipswitch (doesn't have the calendar stuff)
linux/bsd box running imap/pop3, smtp, and ldap

yup, found the documentation on Microsoft site stating that a basic AD structure must be setup for exchange 2000 server 🙁

how do you guys recommend I go about doing this?

I have NT4 PDC and BDCs with Exchange5.5, I want to upgrade to exchange 2000 with the webmail feature...so does this mean I'll need to upgrade everything to win200 or can I keep the existing NT4 domain structure and create a new AD structure for the exchange server?

thx!

you can just upgrade the current directory structure to windows 2000 active directory. i would suggest that first you make sure you have a full backup of each server before you begin. To make it a little easier bring up a brand new BDC for the current NT 4 domain, and once it's up and all domain information has been replicated, then upgrade it to windows 2000. During the upgrade it will ask you about installing AD. The active directory wizard takes care of installing a DNS server for you that will handle dynamic updates and SRV records. If you already have a DNS server in place, you'll need to take a few extra steps to get it ready for active directory.

IMPORTANT TIP WHEN UPGRADING NT 4 DOMAIN TO W2K AD:

Make sure you remove (and store in a VERY safe place) a fully replicated NT4 BDC *BEFORE* starting the upgrade.

Nice peace of mind, knowing you have that failsafe to go back to, if you need it.

Is it possible to keep the existing NT4 domain structure with existing servers, bring up a new w2k server with AD and exchange 2000, and finally setup trust between the NT4 domain and w2k AD so that our existing domain users can get to the mail server? I'd rather not upgrade everything to Win2k...simply because we don't have the budget this year 🙁

You wouldn't even have to do a trust. You should be able to bring up your mail server running AD in the existing domain with few hassles.
