It's getting cold here in New Jersey, the wife is already complaining that she can't ride her bike, so I'm getting her an exercise bike for the winter months. I don't want a piece of crap, looking to spend about $400.00. Started reading up on them, seems like the more expensive bikes are using "magnetic resistance", not sure what that is, but they claim to be quieter. Any suggestions?

I don't know about bikes, but I recently bought a Nordic Trak elliptical trainer that uses magnetic resistance. I can tell you that it is pretty darn quite.

Here is a link, although this may not be the exact model I bought.
I can watch tv while working out in the morning and not wake everyone up. Don't know if this helps, but I would definitely say magnetic is good for low noise. Not sure how a bike would be.

The elliptical is definitely the way to go if you can stretch your budget a little more. I bought the NordicTrack CX 990 this past summer. I also got mine from Sears, got a smokin deal too, normally retails for ~$900 but the Sears manager let me have the floor model with full warranty for $600 out the door. The wife absolutely loves it.

Only downside I see is that it takes up a little more room than a bike. Check out nordictrack.com for ellipticals and bikes.

Good Luck,

I went to buy a NorticTrack CX990 this summer... the salesman told me he'd sell me their floor model for $500. I had to talk it over to my wife, so I went back later and well, he said that he sold it to some guy for $600 instead. I was pissed... so I went home and played video games.

2 things..

1. They are quieter.

2. The Magnetic resistance is a steadier/smoother ride.

Magnetic is superior.

You want advice? Go ride them at a store that sells them. Bikes fit everyone differently and you are going to like or dislike based on ergonomics and that is a completely personal thing.

If there were actually some reviews on the net or I could find somewhere locally that had these to try out, I might consider this.

I like the excersise bikes in the gym at campus where you sort of recline back better than the normal ones.

get a used one, 95% of the new ones that are purchased don't get used more than 1 hour and get sold, so you can get a deal on a used one
