Excercising on a Low-Carb Diet

I have a decent amount of weight to lose - about 45 pounds - and I want to start just doing fat burning excercise. Stuff like those cross trainer machines you can burn like 1000 calories an hour - the gym limits you to 30min cuz they are popular. So if I do that is it safe to stay on a low (or no) carb diet? I am doing the South Beach diet now so when I start going back to the gym (next week) I will be able to eat whole grain and wheat stuff, but I want to keep dropping weight fast. What is the best approach?

Also, in terms of lifting weights, should I resume a balanced diet when I starting doing weight training again?

I dont see any problem with it. If you start really not feeling good just stop.

Don't make the mistake that many do by doing too much exercise, thus sacrificing muscle tissue. I've been lifting nearly 20 years, and I've seen the effects of people who went on near starvation diets of less then 1000 calories/day, and then overdid it with the cardio. What they ended up doing was losing muscle tissue. And when they gave up the low carb lifestyle and return to normal eating (that the majority of people ultimately do) they put on bodyfat even quicker then before because the loss of muscle tissue caused their metabolism to lower. They repeat the diet, lose some fat, lose a ton of muscle, gain it all back, and the same result happens: more lost muscle, more fat gained later on. The yo-yo diet continues until they eventually give up all together and live out the remainder of their lives in a depressed state.

If you're working out, carbs are a necessity. You won't have the energy or ability to maximize yourself otherwise.

It's been shown that alternatives to "low carb" diets work just as well. Adding whole grains though would be a great start, be sure you get a good amount in.
