I had no idea they were the reason for the invasion of Iraq. I had thought the official line was that it was a "resumption of hostility's due to Iraq ignoring UN resolutions". I had thought the WMD part was just to make us feel warm and fuzzy about it.
No, the UN resolutions in question were that Iraq was not allowed to have WMD.
Now, UN resolutions are a statement of their opinion - violating them is not an automatic war. Ask Israel.
Getting the UN to even put war on the radar, not to authorize it, was what all that big todo was with Colin Powell making what he later said was his greatewst mistake, vouching for the WMD argument to the UN.
That got the UN to pass a stronger resolution, but not one athorizing war. When it got closer to Bush wanting to go to war, he was encouraged to get the UN to authorize it, given that he was supposedly going to war over their resolution, but he found that the UN was not going to approve the war - they were busy having their newly re-enetered inspectors complete the WMD inspections, due to complete within about 3 months. So he just ignored them and started what the UN Secretary General called an illegal war.
Sure is nice having that veto power.
While the UN had its inspectors there, Bush simply informed them to leave for their own safety, declared that the US was in too much danger from the Iraq WMD to let the inspections finish, and started a war.
