Ex-Secretary of State Powell slams storm effort

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Colin Powell, the former U.S. secretary of state seen as a potential leader for Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts, has joined the chorus of Americans criticizing the disaster response at all levels of government.

"There have been a lot of failures at a lot of levels -- local, state and federal," Powell said in an ABC interview for the "20/20" program to be broadcast on Friday evening.

Why can't more politicians be like Powell? He calls it likes it is... there were failures at all levels of government on this relief effort. That's right people, both the democrats and republicans are to blame. In addition, he says the high number of black people affected was due to poverty not racism.

He is among various names mentioned in Washington as a potential "hurricane czar" to take over the long-term recovery effort.

I think the creation of a "hurricane czar" is just another way to bloat government. There are allready people who's job it is to over see the releif effort and reconstruction.

everything he said, all sane people already knew.
and the crazy folks that need to hear it have a laundry list of reasons not to trust him.

If only he "called it like it was" a few years back at the UN...

Powell had to make a choice between being a team player and standing by his principles. He chose badly. I suspect that dishonor will haunt him the rest of his life.

He made that choice when he helped cover up My Lai. That was small change compared to what he did to help get the Iraq war started, but the precedent was set.

I wasn't aware of Powell's role in the My Lai denials until three years ago. It definitely lessened my respect for the man. Then again, I haven't heard his side of it lately. Maybe he genuinely believed US troops would never do such a thing. There's nothing more delusional than faith.

Many of the hard core Bushophiles will oppose the Hurricane Czar unless s/he is expressly the leader of reconstruction NOT disaster mediation itself. Bushistas are already circling the wagons to defend the federal governments prior and current disaster efforts (FEMA, in particular). There's no way they would admit that Brown is incompetent after giving him $60B in less than two weeks with minimal oversight.

I believe the idea of a 'Disaster Czar' has been floated out there.

Isn't FEMA supposed to be that?

that's the impression i was under...

all the same - good for powell for standing up and saying what's right in this instance. the dems want to blame the fed gov't, the repubs want to blame the local gov't. once again the truth is in the middle. not nearly as much fun i guess....

Damn that leftist Powell! How dare he also blame the Feds? Doesn't he know it was all the fault of the mayor and the gov.?

Very true.

Reasonable men and women are taking a back seat to the circus that is decending upon us.

fasten your seat belts!

Powell. Pffffft. Isn't he just a disgruntled former employee with a liberal agenda who obviously hates America?

You know what else? Karl Rove told me that just like John McCain, he has a BLACK child!

Scandalous.

Why? Why does he hate our freedom so?

Yeah, well, he's definately not perfect. But, compared to most of the crumbs running around DC, I at least feel like he has some morals and cares about doing a good job.

LOL, almost all of the extreme partisan head bangers here in P&N have admitted in one hurricane thread or another that all levels are responsible but they keep insisting on arguing about individual fault.. Some of you guys are real goobers. 😉
