Sure, I can buy a stripped Dell and add a bunch of my own parts, but that's almost as much work as building from scratch.

adding a video card, ram and hard drive is that much work compared to starting from scratch?

I agree that Dell rapes you on the add ons, but you're smart consumer and well add your own.

Those deals are every month not sometimes.


Home built systems are better for maximum performance and gaming, but its more for the enthusiasts. I've built enough systems in my life for friends, relatives and myself. I guess its not longer cool or fun for me to spend more than I need too. I'm no Rossman, but I want to save money.

What are the odds that the monthly sale will be exactly what you need? Say you don't want speakers? Sorry 40w harmon karden junk speakers anyway. Point is, all the crap they bundle with you is a good deal if u went out and bought it on your own. But chances are the free dealies upgrades, extra speakers ect, aren't really what you would want.

And if they are, then it would be a good deal. Thats all there is to it. If you don't like the dell case (i don't) then don't buy it and shutup.

Another reason to make your own cpu is the PROPIETARY case horror stories when you are trying to upgrade on a mobo etc. I'd rather chuck my cpu rather than try and upgrade from some of these manufactures.

Check the post right below the original post. Someone mentioned spending 6K on an alienware server and how they had to send it in and didn't get it back for 4 months. Then dexvx mentioned for 6k, dell would come to your place to fix it. Now do you see how his post was relevant to the topic about how bad alienware is?

I see your point, but I don't see the relevance... those are servers... his is not. If you spend 6 grand for an enterprise solution, of course you're gonna get good tech support.

and if you read that post you'd see that alienware didn't give him good customer support for his 6k server, which is what the original poster claims happened to him as well (albeit with a normal system). it's ex alienware users unite. the followup post said try dell because for his 6k he got 4 hour service or whatever. which led to a dell sucks build your own arguement, and yeah, here we are.

4 years ago, I had a buddy who was an accountant at a local computer dealer build me a system. Cost me $1600 for an AMD super socket 7, 450 mhz cpu, 17" monitor, dvd player. Cheapo speakers. I didn't know any different at the time. Now, since I build systems for family and friends, I cringe when I see anyone spending more than a grand 🙂
