I thought you were supposed to buy Dual Channel memory in pairs and the two are different (one is really single channel and one has to be dual).

Yes, wrong. Two of these will run in dual channel just fine. There is really no such thing as dual channel memory, all DDR and DDR2 memory are capable of running in dual channel.
