Intelligent design has also become an issue in the Michigan governor's race.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Alarmed by attacks on evolution in the classroom, a group of scientists has recruited a candidate of its own for the Ohio Board of Education.

The scientists, calling themselves Help Ohio Public Education, are backing former Rep. Tom Sawyer, D-Ohio, over Republican incumbent Deborah Owens Fink, who has pushed for students in science class to be taught information for and against evolution.

Owens Fink, a board member since 1999, has run unopposed in past races and said she does not see the evolution debate as central to this race. "When you're very clear on what you stand for, people who agree with you are willing to step up to the plate," she said.

A conservative political action committee called Liberty Committee is backing Owens Fink.

TOKYO - Japanese researchers said Sunday that a bottlenose dolphin captured last month has an extra set of fins that could be the remains of hind legs, a discovery that may provide further evidence that ocean-dwelling mammals once lived on land.

"I believe the fins may be remains from the time when dolphins' ancient ancestors lived on land ... this is an unprecedented discovery," Seiji Osumi, an adviser at Tokyo's Institute of Cetacean Research, said at a news conference televised Sunday.

The second set of fins ? much smaller than the dolphin's front fins ? are about the size of human hands and protrude from near the tail on the dolphin's underside.
