I don't want this to turn into a flame war. I was talking to my friend after class (we watched a movie discussing some aspects of evolution) and she goes "I don't believe in that evolution sh!t"... she's a devout Catholic so I'm sure her upbringing was evolution is devil talk, etc.

My questions were
1. What is the Catholic church's stance on evolution?
2. What is a good site explaining evolution? She said "well why don't apes give birth to humans", so obviously she doesn't understand the concept too well.
3. Where are all the "missing-links"... Neanderthals and the like?

I'm convinced of two things from these evolution threads:

1) Evolution is wrong and creation is right.
2) Creation is wrong and evolution is right.

what makes your science book fact over their religious book? only thing i can see is one's point of view.
 
Because one was written by who knows who, for who knows why. While the other verified by many people (scientists) who are much more knowledgeable in many things than people thousands of years ago.

A somewhat complex summary of Catholic teaching on evolution as well as an official document.

The first major teaching on the subject was Pope Pius XII's letter in 1950 entitled "On Human Origins" (Humanae Generis) which stated that
"...the Teaching Authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions, on the part of men experienced in both fields, take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter -- for the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God. However, this must be done in such a way that the reasons for both opinions, that is, those favorable and those unfavorable to evolution, be weighed and judged with the necessary seriousness, moderation and measure, and provided that all are prepared to submit to the judgment of the Church, to whom Christ has given the mission of interpreting authentically the Sacred Scriptures and of defending the dogmas of faith."

As I understand it, people are allowed to discuss and weigh the arguments for/against the evolution of the human body from prior living matter (apes or whatnot), and people are for now free to believe whatever they think has more merit, until such time as the Church might ever make a more determinant teaching on the subject. In any case, the soul of the first man is created by God.

Having weighed the scientific evidence, I have yet to be convinced that one kind of animal can ever turn into another kind. The centuries old art of animal Breeding has shown that there are limits to diversity within a kind of animal.

due to the fact that i went to catholic school for 12 years. i hvae a good explanation for you about the churchs stance

catholics believe that it is ok to beleive in evolution, as long as god had a hand in it. catholics also have to realize that gods direct intervention is what makes humans different from our ancestors. ie. he gave us a soul.

catholic schools were NOT allowed to teach evolution at any level but that changed about 8 years ago.
