EVO 4G getting 2.3 Gingerbread on June 6th

Well, this was inevitable. After Sprint's website snafu outing its Android 2.3 intentions for the EVO 4G, we've received evidence that points to June 6th as its release date. Better yet, if you're willing to manually check for its availability, you might even find a happy surprise this Friday. In addition to Gingerbread, users will find SMS and Gmail fixes, along with a tweak to the phone's power management software. Hopefully you've got WiMAX, because this update is coming over-the-air. Should everything go according to plan, users will have less than a week to say goodbye to Froyo. It's a trusty companion for sure, but that spicy aroma is quite enticing. Hit the break for some corroborating clues.

Cool for a phone a year old.

I can't wait until the usual gang of EVO Sense ROM devs get a hold of this. I already like what they have done to ported stuff.

Looks like a lot of devices may be getting it pretty soon. From the rumors we have the epic will follow in a couple weeks. The normal sprint employee who used to leak stuff to xda got himself in trouble so we are more out of the loop now.

Although it's pretty awesome that HTC and Sprint were willing to bring this update to a phone this old, it really is just gingerbread in the end. Sense is still the old old sense.

On the other hand, the evo shift gets fully upgraded with GB and sense 2.1, and you probably already noticed a bunch of devs are skipping the regular evo gb update and working with the evo shift's sense 2.1 update and including sense 3.0 elements (lockscreen, weather app, etc) from the kingdom leak.

I think for most of the dev community, people are excited about this due to the finalized kernel. It should fix the brightness issue for people with nova displays.

I think they used the ol' Midway "AF" trick to catch him.

where is this update? checked the PRL update, and the HTC software update, to which it couldn't find it!

Huh? The EVO is not an old phone by any means. It's still relatively new.

A year old phone is considered old for the market, not for consumers. The evo is at its end of life right now. In other words, it's going to be discontinued very soon.

I've heard gingerbread update breaks the speech to text function. Deal breaker. I'll wait until that gets fixed.

You cant text faster than you can talk by now? fail

Only problem I found with mine is my green flashy light when I get a text doesnt go off anymore.

Gingerbreads keyboard is not good IMHO and I find the new app drawer to be fugly as hell. Not sure what GB changes under the hood, but everything I see visually I'm not feeling much at all.

what "new" app drawer? same as it always was on my Evo..
keyboard seems alot better than the old one to me.. even turned off Swype to try it.

it has 3 buttons at the bottom for all apps, frequent used apps and download ones. And it scrolls 1 full page with any swipe. The rom I rom is suppose to be vanilla GB. 2.2's app drawer was so much better. I don't think it's a sense thing as the sense on my phone's still 2.1 or whatever the pre 3.0 version was. It changed to the new app drawer when I updated to 2.3

That's definitely not stock Gingerbread app drawer. It's either Sense or whatever Rom you're running.

This is what quebert is talking about. It's definitely a sense app drawer.

First tab is shown (My Apps), second tab is frequent apps, and third tab is downloaded apps. If I actually used the app drawer, I would actually like this. Especially the downloaded apps tab. But I don't and I just use folders.
